We lead the movement to reforest America, from cities to large, forested landscapes.
About us
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. Its mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. In the past 25 years alone, American Forests has planted nearly 50 million trees in more than 1,000 high-impact forest restoration projects. These projects have restored hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, protected vital watersheds and sequestered millions of tons of greenhouse gases. American Forests is also one of the nation’s leading advocates for expanding urban tree canopy and green space, and a key funder of urban forest initiatives that have transformed communities across the country. American Forests is looking for someone to join our forestry and restoration science team with a special focus on climate adaptation! The Sr. Manager, Forest Climate Adaptation will support work including: (1) Reforestation assessments and project design / program eligibility mapping--with a special emphasis on Tribal Nations and underserved private landowners. (2) Mainstreaming and developing climate change adaptation activities and best practice, developing and/or deploying frameworks, strategies and tools; providing training; developing and disseminating learning--e.g., supporting climate vulnerability analysis, selection of tree species and seed sources, and monitoring and adaptive management. (3) Otherwise working closely with American Forests' restoration science team to advance our applied research efforts, and with our Reforest America Carbon Program, to dovetail climate adaptation & climate mitigation as an innovation for the voluntary carbon market.

Caldor Fire comeback: American Forests’ Brian Kittler recently visited recovering forests near Placerville, California. In 2021, the 220,000-acre Caldor Fire decimated trees in the El Dorado National Forest and surrounding areas. Now, American Forests and the USDA Forest Service are replanting climate-resilient trees to help these forests regenerate and stay healthy for years to come. Thank a firefighter on #NationalWildlandFirefighterDay! Careers in wildland fire can take you to parks across the country! From battlefields in the Northeast, the prairies of the Midwest, the forests of the Rocky Mountains, and to the wilderness of Alaska, we're recruiting future leaders that will shape wildland fire management, face the threats of climate change, refine policy, and maintain a safe and healthy environment for our workforce. 🏙🌡️ A Tale of 2 Cities 🌡️🏙 American Forests’ own Tori Ford Jowers and Neveen Shawish decided to put our Tree Equity Score tool to the test! They visited two neighborhoods in two different cities with different #TreeEquity Scores to see if they could feel a difference. On average, the temperature in June in the DC area can be anywhere from 80-85° Fahrenheit. In the last couple of weeks, temperatures in DC have reached the high 90’s, the same temperatures as one of the hottest cities in America: San Antonio, TX. 🌡️ Trees are critical urban infrastructure that are essential to public health and well-being. Tree Equity Score was created to help address damaging environmental inequities by prioritizing human-centered investment in areas with the greatest need. 🌳 Hear more from Tori and Neveen, then go find your neighborhood’s Tree Equity Score at www.TreeEquityScore.org #ExtremeHeat
