We lead the movement to reforest America, from cities to large, forested landscapes.
About us
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. Its mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. In the past 25 years alone, American Forests has planted nearly 50 million trees in more than 1,000 high-impact forest restoration projects. These projects have restored hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, protected vital watersheds and sequestered millions of tons of greenhouse gases. American Forests is also one of the nation’s leading advocates for expanding urban tree canopy and green space, and a key funder of urban forest initiatives that have transformed communities across the country. We recently visited our partners over at PRT Growing Services Ltd.'s nursery in Hubbard, Oregon, where PRT is growing 1.4 million seedlings on behalf of American Forests and the USDA Forest Service. These seedlings, which include ponderosa pine, larch and western hemlock, will be headed to national forests in Oregon and Washington, where they will support vital reforestation efforts -- many in areas affected by destructive wildfires in 2020.

On this historic day for our country, we thank President Joe Biden and the whole Biden-Harris administration for some of the most consequential policy actions in history to protect and restore our trees and forests so they can deliver natural climate solutions, water, habitat, recreation, forest products and much more. From the forest measures in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA), including the bipartisan REPLANT Act that is funding reforestation of burned and degraded land across our national forests, to the many forest provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA), including the world’s largest ever investment in cooling tree cover for cities, we are grateful to the Biden-Harris administration for making forest solutions a top priority for both executive action and legislation. These historic investments will create healthy and resilient forests that sequester carbon and clean our water, reduce risk of wildfire, and create #TreeEquity to bring “nature’s air conditioning” to heal vulnerable urban communities across the country. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the President, Vice President, and future administrations to deliver forest solutions for our country, working all together as “One Nation Under Trees.” #Forests4Climate Learn more about these historic investments 👇 🌲REPLANT: https://bit.ly/47HTxjL 🌳IIJA and IRA: https://bit.ly/3YegA3Y

President Joe Biden has been one of the most 🌳-mendous leaders for forests in our nation’s history. We’ve had a front row seat at American Forests as partners and admirers of the Biden-Harris administration as they have racked up game-changing wins on forest conservation, wildfire resilience, reforestation, urban forests & #TreeEquity, protection of old growth and mature forests, forest products innovation and so much more. From executive orders to brokering historic forest wins in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, our nation is now implementing forest solutions, including #Forests4Climate, at a world-leading scale. At American Forests, we are grateful for every single one of these opportunities and the way the Biden-Harris administration has invited partner organizations like ours into the implementation of these massive wins through innovative keystone agreements and other partnership structures. 🙏 will never quite be enough, and the best is yet to come for our country as we put all of these efforts fully into motion and use them as proof of concept to continue this level of forest investment and public-private collaboration into the future.
