ACPM members are engaged in preventive medicine practice, teaching and research. Many serve on ACPM committees, task forces and panels, representing preventive medicine in national forums, which contributes to the organization's role as a major resource for expertise within this specialized area of medicine. The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)'s Board of Directors honored departing Chair, Wendy E. Braund, MD, MPH, MSEd, FACPM, and Occupational and Environmental Medicine Vice Chair, Dr. Jeffrey Levin, last Friday during its Mid-Year Meeting in Chicago. There were a lot of laughs and some tears, but both Directors and Staff expressed their gratitude for the time and energy Drs. Braund and Levin have poured into the work of the Board. Both are exceptional advocates for board certification, their respective specialties, and Preventive Medicine as a whole. We are proud to have worked with them - and look forward to continuing to engage their talents to advance the cause of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Heather O'Hara-Rand has taken the reins as Chair of the Board; we are looking forward to continuing success under her capable leadership! In addition, the ABPM was pleased to welcome Dr. Pam Krahl and Dr. Michele Soltis as the incoming Occupational and Environmental Medicine Director and Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Director, respectively. Drs. Krahl and Soltis began their terms on the Board immediately upon the conclusion of the Board's Mid-Year Meeting.

June 27th was National HIV Testing Day and now is a great time to know your HIV status. As a board-certified Family Medicine & Preventive Medicine physician, member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), and practicing HIV specialist through American Academy of HIV Medicine, I am concerned about the climbing rates of HIV in Oregon over the past few years. In 2020, there were 180 Oregonians diagnosed with new-onset HIV, and in 2022 there were 244 new HIV diagnoses made, which is a 35% increase. It is also estimated that over 1,000 Oregonians are living with HIV but are undiagnosed. These statistics may seem startling, but together, we have an opportunity to make a positive impact in our community. HIV prevention is for ALL individuals, and we can all work to ensure that our community has access to HIV care, free of stigma, bias, and discrimination. People should be able to discuss testing opportunities for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) with medical providers in a non-judgmental, trauma-free manner. The Oregon Health Authority has partnered with www.STDcheck.com to offer free HIV and syphilis testing for people who want to check their status. People can call 1-800-456-2323 to get scheduled with a nearby lab for free testing. People also deserve to have open conversations around PrEP, PEP, DoxyPEP, or other prevention methods. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Let’s Stop HIV Together campaign, https://lnkd.in/gG98tnvJ has downloadable toolkits, social media templates, testing resources, and more.

  • "What does it mean to “move the needle”? In thinking about the theme for the 2025 ACPM annual conference, the planning committee and ACPM leadership settled on “Moving the Needle for Preventive Medicine and Public Health”. This phrase is a play on words meant not only to immediately evoke Seattle’s famous Space Needle as a recognizable landmark that also serves as a fitting image for the logo of the conference, but more importantly, it connotes the need for change and for actions to drive such changes. Preventive Medicine (PM) specialists are certainly no strangers to both needs: as the medical specialty that bridges between the house of medicine and the house of public health (PH), we are constantly working to promote and protect health, and to prevent disease, disability and premature death for populations as well as the social groups and individuals within them." Read "Moving the Needle for Preventive Medicine and Public Health" by ACPM Fellow and Chair of the PM2025 Conference Planning Committee Dr. Yuri T. Jadotte MD, PhD, MPH, FACPM. • Approximately 1 in 7 people living with HIV are unaware of their status. Clinicians play a crucial role in addressing this gap by reducing missed opportunities to screen for HIV and ensuring patients are linked to appropriate care and treatment. By utilizing the CDC's HIV Nexus resources, healthcare providers can access valuable tools and information to enhance HIV screening efforts. These resources are designed to support clinicians in improving patient outcomes and advancing public health. For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/eZkheMTp.
