The FDA is proposing to remove oral phenylephrine (PE) as an active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) products after an extensive review found it is not effective as a nasal decongestant. While the drug was approved in 1976, numerous studies showed no significant difference between PE treatments and placebos. Some nasal decongestant products contain oral PE and another active ingredient such as acetaminophen or dextromethorphan. The presence of PE in these medicines does not affect how other active ingredients work, and consumers can continue to use those products. A final order from the FDA will come next year. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are increasing among children, especially those ages 2-4. Mycoplasma pneumoniae isn’t typically a leading cause of pneumonia in pediatric populations. The CDC recommends that pediatricians swab both the throat and the nasopharynx of patients suspected to have pneumonia to increase the likelihood of detecting mycoplasma pneumoniae, as well as prescribe antibiotics that are effective against the strain. AAP, in a new policy statement, calls for the creation of universal paid family and medical leave to care for a newborn or sick family member. Research shows paid leave has major health benefits to both the baby and the parents – including lower rates of preterm birth, higher rates of breastfeeding, reduced child mortality rates, and decreased rates of postpartum depression. Yet in this country, paid leave is only available to 6% - 27% of the workforce. Learn more and read the policy statement in AAP News: https://lnkd.in/eaRXX9Mp
