About us
America’s VetDogs® began in 2003 as a project of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind to consolidate and increase our outreach to veterans of all eras. In 2006, it became a separate 501(c)(3) corporation. VetDogs provides guide dogs for veterans who are blind; service dogs for those with other physical disabilities; physical and occupational therapy dogs to work with amputees in military and VA hospitals; and combat stress control dogs to be deployed in theater. All of our services are provided at no cost to veterans, and our funding comes from the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, foundations, businesses, and service and fraternal clubs. For a veteran with a serious limb injury, amputation, or traumatic brain injury, a service dog can provide stability support climbing up and down stairs or getting in and out of a chair, and can be trained to fetch and retrieve specific items, e.g., medication, a wallet, or a phone. For veterans with seizure disorder, dogs can be trained to alert for seizure response.

Today, America's VetDogs honors the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990! This groundbreaking legislation prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. Since March 15, 2011, only dogs are recognized as service animals under the ADA. Our service dogs, including PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, and seizure response dogs, are specially trained to assist veterans and first responders with disabilities, ensuring they can navigate public spaces with ease and independence. Join us in celebrating this milestone and the ADA's impact on creating a more inclusive environment! 🐾💙

Today is National #HireAVeteranDay! 🎉 Did you know that roughly 200,000 military members retire or separate from the armed services every year? These veterans bring exceptional skills and core values to civilian jobs: dedication, teamwork, good communication, and pride in getting work done. The Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs promote this day by encouraging employers to seek out qualified veterans to hire and promote. Government support and initiatives, such as the HIRE Vets Medallion Program, recognize companies committed to veteran hiring, retention, and professional development. #AmericasVetDogs #Veterans #FirstResponders #ServiceDog

Military hospital facility dogs fulfill many services daily. They provide comfort and a wet nose to patients and wounded warriors recovering from surgery and boost morale among hospital staff. Whether by land, sea, or air, these dogs are always at the ready. #DHADogDays | #DogDaysOfSummer | #Dogs
