We had a great time celebrating the President’s Safety Award with our Monroe team! The President’s Safety Award is earned by the operation that shows consistent dedication and improvements to safety at all levels within the operation. There are two categories: Large Processing Yard and Small Feeder Yard. The small feeder yard category includes all yards with limited processing equipment such as balers/shears and operate under 50 thousand production hours annually. The Monroe team earned this award by having a great attitude towards safety, welcoming the EHS Coordinator training and walkarounds, and being 4 years injury-free. Pictured from left to right are: Regional Director of Operations Alex Bilse, EHS Coordinator Ethan Turriff, Crane Operator Douglas Fry, General Laborer Chris Nelson, Executive Vice President Michael Goldstein, Monroe Facility Manager Sheila Fry, CDL Driver Gary Pulver, and CDL Driver Chad Stricker.

Alter Trading is honored to celebrate the 40th work anniversary of Crane Operator Dennis “Denny” Breczinski. Denny started working at our Marshall, MN yard right out of high school and has seen lots of changes over the years. Through those years Denny has learned to run multiple pieces of equipment proficiently and efficiently. We kind of think of Denny as “Do-all Denny” on account of his ability to run all of the equipment, his history with the equipment and his knowledge of what might be the best tool for the job. Denny is definitely not afraid to learn a new piece of equipment or try something new. Congratulations, Denny!

At Alter Trading, our interns don’t just gain experience, they help make an impact and shape the future of metal recycling. This year’s Summer Intern is Niamh Prentiss, an environmental engineering major from the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison Corporate Sustainability Internship Program. Here’s what she has to say about interning for Alter so far this summer: Q: Describe your internship project at Alter Trading: A: “I have been working on creating a greenhouse gas inventory for Alter’s Wisconsin yards. A greenhouse gas inventory tracks direct and indirect emission sources and the number of heat-trapping gases that are released over a given year. I am working to create a standardized system for creating a yearly GHG inventory. This will allow Alter to easily track their GHG emissions year after year.” Q: What have you learned this summer about the metal recycling industry? A: “Before working with Alter, I had little understanding of the importance of metal recycling. The metal recycling industry has many environmental benefits. By reducing the need for mining metals, Alter helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions associated with extracting and processing raw materials.” Q: What is the most memorable experience you’ve had so far at Alter Trading?A: “The most memorable experience has been exploring the different scrap yards and learning about the metal recycling industry. This industry is one that I knew very little about. Working here this summer has allowed me to understand the innerworkings of metal recycling and to understand its importance. Touring Alter’s yards and learning about the different steps it takes to create a final product are experiences I will never forget.” Thank you, Niamh, for rising to the challenge of collecting and managing data that will help shape strategies that guide our sustainability programs going forward.
