Consumers all over the world enjoy California’s wholesome, high-quality almonds. They’re California’s most valuable agricultural export and the second largest acreage crop in the state. And the Almond Board of California is both a leader in this industry and a great place to work. We’re here to help farmers market their crop and invest in research to identify operational efficiencies and precision food safety and growing practices. We do this on behalf of California’s over 6,800 almond growers and 100 processors, many of whom are third- and fourth- generation farmers. To be a sustainable crop for California, we’ve increased and accelerated our research investment in key areas like water conservation, air quality and 22nd century agronomics. Agriculture isn’t a static industry; it’s always evolving with changes in climate, resource availability, science, and technology. Our research programs keep us on the forefront of this change. We’re constantly learning more and helping California’s almond community take advantage of the latest science in order to meet the future needs of the industry while benefiting local communities and the environment. We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Tastemaker Trials student competition. The competition challenged students to develop a new almond-based snack while considering AI-informed consumer trends from Tastewise, an AI-driven data platform that provide real-time insights into food and beverage preferences. Ciara Danay Hernandez and Brianna Price food science majors from California State University, Fresno were selected by panel of judges with expertise in food, culinary science and product marketing. Their winning product concept, "Billion Dollar Energy – Almond Brownie Energy Cups," combines almonds with pea protein crisps, cacao nibs, dates and other plant-based ingredients to create a healthier yet indulgent baked snack. The Billion Dollar Energy team will receive a trip to Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) FIRST from July 14-17, 2024, and ongoing mentorship opportunities from the judges. Food industry members attending the show can visit the Almond Board of California's kiosk SK3 in the Startup Pavilion to meet this year's Tastemaker Trials winners and sample their concept. The Almond Board of California is committed to championing the next generation of product developers who will shape the future of the food industry and contribute to the creation of exciting yet sustainable products!
