I was honored to speak at the Future of Democracy Forum, co-hosted by the Diplomatic Courier and Community of Democracies, on the eve of the #NATO Leaders Summit in Washington, DC last week.  A fabulous variety of leaders and experts - from military, NATO and government to NGOs, international orgs and tech. I was amazed that with such diversity, there was such wide agreement that our #1 biggest threat (or at least close to it - I wasn’t in all the breakout groups but heard summaries from them all) is the breakdown of democratic society and democratic culture - primarily due to social division and misinformation. The violence last weekend highlights how urgent the situation has become, but I left the forum hopeful - not only can we identify the problems, we can also identify the solutions. #democracy #solutions

Co-Founder and Executive Director of More Like US

Today is my last official day at S&P Global, and I’m excited to focus on my role as Executive Director of More Like US! More Like US reduces political polarization, starting with Gen Z. This is both the start of a new adventure, and a culmination of nearly eight years since the 2016 election. At that time, I felt my country was tearing itself apart, yet I didn’t know what was wrong, or what I could do about it. I tried for a long time to work as a volunteer within organizations such as Braver Angels to reduce polarization at scale in such a large country. While I made some progress, a couple years ago, I realized the only meaningful way forward was to start a new organization. With wonderful co-founders Dane Erickson, Ann Salpeter Schockett, and Bazi Kanani, we turned an idea into More Like US. More Like US focuses on building trust by sharing the message that Americans are more similar across the political spectrum than often believed. We now have a lesson plan for high school students, and we built Similarity Hub to show hundreds of examples of policy and viewpoint overlaps between Republicans and Democrats with our awesome partners at AllSides, including John Gable and Andrew Weinzierl. We’ll likely be able to announce other innovative initiatives in the near future. Misperceptions matter because some can start seeing their fellow Americans as overly threatening, not to mention morally and cognitively deficient. Some may think it is best to prevent “them” from having and using power at nearly any cost, putting our country’s democratic republic and/or physical safety at risk. Our focus on misperceptions comes from academic findings such as those in the Strengthening Democracy Challenge led by Stanford University, which showed correcting these partisan misperceptions is more effective than nearly any other scalable intervention. Our Social Science Advisory Council has been vital to ensuring the quality of content we produce, and we appreciate academics willing to test the effectiveness of our approaches. More Like US benefits from the excellent contributions of Paul Jacobs, That Htoo, and Nolan Goodwin, as well as our summer interns Bryan Fernandez Gonzalez, Natalie Dreyer, and Ratul Chakraborty. More Like US is grateful for the support from the ICRD: International Center for Religion & Diplomacy. I appreciate S&P Global for offering a six-month sabbatical the first half of this year, so I could explore More Like US full-time. I’ve been lucky to work at S&P Global and three predecessor companies for more than the past 11 years, with so many talented colleagues. I trust they will keep addressing the world’s energy issues, while I change paths to run More Like US.

I’ll admit it – I was feeling exhausted by, and took a break from, the news cycle recently. After a few days off, I reminded myself, no John, now is the time to engage. In the lead up to November, the team at AllSides has been tirelessly working to help our audience of over 15 million monthly unique users understand the world, and themselves, a little better each day. In the past 6 months we… ● Secured a major bias audit client – Newsweek! We’ve worked closely with Newsweek’s Global Editor in Chief, Head of Standards, and other top executives to provide insights on how audiences perceive Newsweek (spoiler: most Americans rate its bias as Center.) ● Hit 20,000 downloads of the AllSides app for the first time. ● Launched new tools for addressing polarization and news bias, including Similarity Hub, which reveals policy overlaps on both sides/points of agreement among Americans, and AllSides Local, the most comprehensive and balanced news feed available for all 50 states and Puerto Rico. We’ve also launched the AI-powered AllSides Bias Checker™ to investors of $500 or more — a beta tool that provides instant bias ratings for any news article on demand. We launched our crowdfund initiative in late March. I have been amazed by the 344 people that joined me as part-owners of AllSides – a humbling number when I think back to the day when it was just Scott, Joan and me working on my crazy idea. As much as we’d like to keep the round open indefinitely, we are going to have to close it soon. For those of you looking to invest for the first time, or increase your allocation, I strongly recommend doing so before the round closes. If you've been meaning to tell a friend/family/peer, now’s the time. Go to wefunder.com/allsides to learn more.
