Allergy & Asthma Network supports the bipartisan Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act, which was introduced into Congress on July 25. Here is a statement on the legislation. We want to thank our advocates for their efforts on Capitol Hill. During Allergy & Asthma Day Capitol Hill (AADCH) on May 8, 2024, AAN’s CEO Lynda Mitchell, MA, CAE , along with Pennsylvania advocates, met with Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA) to discuss crucial issues affecting people with allergies and asthma. We are pleased that Reps. Fitzpatrick and Paul Tonko (NY) have introduced the bipartisan Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act.   This new bill aims to protect the public from poor indoor air quality (IAQ), with a particular focus on ensuring that the air within schools and daycare facilities is safe and healthy. We strongly support this important legislation and thank Representatives Tonko and Fitzpatrick for their leadership to improve indoor air quality for those with asthma and allergies, thereby creating a safer and healthier learning environment for students and in daycare facilities.   Read more about the legislation here: https://lnkd.in/e3nbusJW

It is important to emphasize to asthma and allergy patients the importance of hurricane preparedness, which lasts into November. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes and even earthquakes can worsen chronic conditions like asthma and allergies. Work with patients so they have an emergency plan in place to maintain their health and safety. Essential Components of an Asthma and Allergy Disaster Preparedness Kit: 📝 Asthma Action Plan and/or Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan: Ensure patients have personalized plans that detail how to manage their conditions during emergencies. 💊 Supply of Medications: Patients should have an ample supply of their prescribed medications to avoid interruptions in treatment. 🩺 Medical Devices: This includes inhalers, spacers, peak flow meters, and other essential devices. 🏥 Copies of Medical Records and Prescription Refill Information: Important for continuity of care and accessing necessary treatments. 💧 Bottled Water, Allergen-Free Food, and Cash: Vital for maintaining health and well-being during disruptions. 😷 Face Masks and Goggles: Protect against allergens and irritants, such as smoke. 📄 Contact Information Card: Ensure patients have up-to-date contact information for healthcare providers and emergency contacts. For further guidance on disaster preparedness for asthma and allergies, visit https://lnkd.in/eCFy3JF8 Asthma self-management education, a key component of the EXHALE strategies, is essential for improving patient outcomes. These educational efforts should be incorporated across various settings, including clinics, emergency departments, hospitals, pharmacies, schools, and homes, to enhance the overall quality of asthma care. By promoting comprehensive preparedness and ongoing education, we can better support our patients in managing their asthma and allergies during natural disasters.

Healthcare providers, make sure your asthma patients know the difference between Oral Corticosteroids (OCS)and Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS). If patients frequently turn to OCS for asthma control, it could indicate uncontrolled asthma. Over-reliance on OCS can cause serious short- and long-term side effects. Learn more through this infographic and consider discussing a new treatment plan with your patients. 💼🫁💡 https://lnkd.in/dn7TE84 #AsthmaCare #OCSvsICS #PatientHealth

Were you not able to attend the recent ‘Health Disparities in the Allergy, Asthma, and Immunologic Health Diseases’’ webinar with Nancy Joseph, DO? Don’t worry, we have 5 key takeaways for you! 🌟 Key Takeaways: 🌟 1️⃣ Health disparities are differences in health linked to social, economic, and environmental factors. These differences affect people's health outcomes. 2️⃣ Health equity means giving everyone what they need to be healthy. It is not about giving everyone the same exact thing, but giving each person what they need based on their situation. 3️⃣ African American children have higher rates of food allergies than other racial and ethnic groups. They also have higher rates of severe reactions and ER visits due to food allergies. 4️⃣ Eczema is more common and more severe in African American children. They have more doctor visits and missed school days due to eczema. It is important to recognize that eczema looks different on Black and Brown skin. This understanding can help prevent under-diagnosis or misdiagnosis.  5️⃣ Efforts to address health disparities include improving access to care, increasing awareness, and providing education tailored to the needs of different communities. This helps ensure everyone gets the care they need. 🎥 We have the full recording and transcript of the webinar available at our website for your viewing!  https://lnkd.in/ePnVGn32 This Advances webinar is in partnership with the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
