Tennesseans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) need and deserve equitable oral healthcare. Read our report with Harmony Health to learn more about these oral health disparities—and the steps clinicians and policymakers can take to inspire positive change.
New research highlights a critical healthcare disparity in Tennessee: people with disabilities are more likely to forgo doctor visits due to cost concerns. This financial barrier extends beyond general healthcare, significantly impacting access to essential dental care as well. The The American Institute of Dental Public Health (AIDPH) and Harmony Health have released an eye-opening report on the challenges faced by Tennesseans with disabilities in accessing oral health services. This disparity not only affects overall health but can lead to severe dental issues that could have been prevented with regular care. As professionals in healthcare, policy, and advocacy, we must address these systemic barriers. How can we work together to: - Reduce financial obstacles to healthcare for people with disabilities? - Improve dental care accessibility in our communities? - Raise awareness about the importance of oral health for overall well-being? We encourage you to read the full report and join the conversation on improving healthcare equity in Tennessee: https://bit.ly/tn-idd

More photos from last week's eventful Day of Action for Oral Health! Click to zoom in for a better view. Our Federal Service Immersion program attendees met with a number of legislative offices from across the country and across the political aisle. These include Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Darrell E. Issa (R-CA), Angus S. King, Jr. (I-ME), Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), John Cornyn (R-TX), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Rick Scott (R-FL), Valerie P. Foushee (D-NC), and Thom Tillis (R-NC) (we'll have photos to come from Maggie Hassan, D-NH). They also post outside the Librarians' Wall of the Library of Congress. The day rounded out with dinner and drinks at the famed Hawk n' Dove. Thank you so much for joining along with us! #senate #congress #dc #dentalpolicy #dentaladvocacy

AIDPH and the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD) are producing a toolkit to build the capacity of oral health professionals, people with disabilities, and other stakeholders to advocate for Medicaid dental benefits for adults with disabilities. This session will explore the benefits of using storytelling as an advocacy strategy to engage audiences about the importance of these benefits. Attendees will learn practical storytelling techniques and gain access to resources to ensure stories are told authentically and respectfully. While data and facts are essential to any policy initiative, storytelling is what can help audiences engage on an emotional level, inspiring them to advocate and take action for meaningful healthcare reform. #disabilityadvocacy #medicaid #dentalcare

Yesterday, our Federal Service Immersion (FSI) participants visited the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) headquarters in Washington, D.C., where we learned about how PCORI funds health infrastructure and community/patient engagement with Christina Maly. We also gave an overview of our community engagement model and described the work that we do as advocates and allies to create change. Following this, we heard from Dr Jacqueline Burgette, DMD, PhD on her personal career journey alongside her work at the FDA. The day rounded out with group dinner near the capitol. Pictures to come later today from our Day of Action for Oral Health! #oralhealth #policy #advocacy
