AIChE Fuels & Petrochemicals Division
Oil and Gas
Established to further the application of chemical engineering principles in the fields of fuels and petrochemicals.
About us
AIChE's Fuels and Petrochemicals Division was established to further the application of chemical engineering principles in the fields of fuels and petrochemicals. The division provides a forum for information exchange and coordination of activities with those of other societies in the field. Each year, the Fuels and Petrochemicals Division sponsors some 350 papers in nearly 70 technical sessions at AIChE meetings, relating to the production, refining, utilization, and conversion of liquid, solid, and gaseous fuels. Objectives of the AIChE Fuels and Petrochemicals Division include: ◾ To further the application of chemical engineering in the fuels and petrochemicals fields by industrial, educational, institutional and governmental groups. ◾ To provide a communications medium for the exchange of non-confidential information of mutual interest among individuals engaged in all phases of fuels and petrochemicals activities. ◾ To provide a forum for the dissemination of information, ideas, and attitudes between the practicing engineer and the chemical engineering educator. ◾ To instill an early interest in the Institute among the engineers in these specific fields; and to promote cross-fertilization of ideas with chemical engineers in other industries and thus to stimulate transfer of knowledge from one field to another. ◾ To coordinate the Institute's activities with other societies active in fuels and petrochemicals. ◾ To provide leadership, assistance and expertise as appropriate to the Institute, industrial, education, and governmental groups in all fields of fuels and petrochemicals activities, including safety, health and environment.

Looking back at an exciting AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers Spring Meeting last week in New Orleans! The Fuels & Petrochemicals Division program opened with the Joint Industry 4.0/F&PD Plenary Lecture delivered by Prof Niall Mac Dowell of Imperial College London and Billy Bardin, former AIChE President and Global Climate Transition Director for Dow. The plenary was chaired by Bea (Birgit) Braun (Dow) and Francesco Coletti (Hexxcell) and was followed by 40 sessions with more than 120 papers spread across five Topical Conferences: Gas Utilization (chaired by Nimir Elbashir of Texas A&M University at Qatar and Zhe Cui of Shell), Refining (chaired by Ellen Arnold of Honeywell and Robert Sigal of bp), Petrochemicals (chaired by Chris Buehler, PhD, PE of Exponent and Eberhard Lucke of Lucke Consulting Technology Services, LLC), Energy Transition (chaired by Debalina Sengupta of Texas A&M University and Kirtan Trivedi of ExxonMobil) and Heat Exchangers (chaired by Francesco Coletti of Hexxcell and Nicholas Urbanski of ExxonMobil). As a part of the various Topicals we had three special events: 💡 Keynote for the 3rd Topical Conference on Heat Exchangers by Rob Broekhuis, Chief Scientist of SABIC on "Electrification of Cracking Furnaces" 🌎 Keynote for the 22nd Topical Conference on Gas Utilization by Lina R., Qatar Shell Research and Technology Center on "CO2 Utilization Technologies to Support Decarbonization Journey" 🎓 Panel Discussion for the Topical Conference on Energy Transition: Energy Transition Roundtable with Energy Leaders with Dr. Felicia R. Lucci, PhD of DOE, Prof. Iftekar Karimi of National University of Singapore, Dr. Shyamal Bej, of Shell and Dr. Ese Jeroro of Honeywell UOP A big thank you to all the Session and Topical chairs and, in particular, to the Overall Programming chair Saadet Ulas Acikgoz and Co-chair Debalina Sengupta for making this possible. Shout out to Justin Canna for his tireless support! Thank you also to our outgoing chair, Mahdi Nouri CEng FIChemE (Triumph Gas Technology Consulting, LLC) for arranging a fantastic F&PD Award dinner on Monday where Bill Rooney (Honeywell), winner of the 2024 F&PD Award, gave an engaging presentation and Belma D. (bp) was presented with the F&PD Distinguished Service Award.
