Last week, AHC volunteered with partner Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland at Allium Place, our upcoming Montgomery County community at 4010 Randolph Road, to help build one of the 27 homeownership condos and houses that will be available there. The community will also have 168 affordable rental apartments. AHC staff and volunteers worked hard to raise the exterior panels of a house, including windows and doorways. The group used drills of all kinds, hammers, levels, and so much more! They donned the necessary hard hats, work gloves, safety vests & glasses, and boots. At lunch, the group heard from Ronald Spoor about Habitat for Humanity’s work in the region and beyond. It was a rewarding day full of collaboration and intentional work!
About us
Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is a community-focused, non-profit affordable housing developer. Since 1975, AHC Inc. has developed more than 50 apartment communities with more than 8,200 affordable apartments in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. AHC also provides extensive educational programs and social services onsite at our apartment communities to enhance residents’ lives – and the communities we serve. AHC prioritizes community-building, equity, and diversity throughout our organization - from thoughtful engagement with the residents we serve to long-time relationships with local government and community partners. Our outstanding real estate track record includes innovative development strategies, award-winning architectural design, cutting-edge environmental solutions, and long-time partnerships and quality developments that strengthen neighborhoods and local economies. AHC’s nationally recognized Resident Services program initiated nearly 30 years ago, is helping build stronger futures for more than 3,000 children, youth, and adults who live in our affordable housing communities through education programs, social services, community partnerships, and access to local support. Our team has earned the industry-leader CORES certification, which recognizes AHC’s ongoing commitment to the highest standards for resident services. Volunteer opportunities include working with elementary students in our Afterschool or Summer Program and teens in our Tutoring and College and Career Readiness Programs. We are proud that 100% of the students in our education programs have graduated from high school, with the majority going to college - most the first in their families to achieve this life-changing milestone. Our August #VolunteerSpotlight is here! We spoke with Kevin Flores, a dedicated volunteer and donor. He also runs his own business, DCS Business Service Contractors, and AHC is one of his clients. Kevin grew up in Arlington and enjoys being able to give back to the community. Recently, he volunteered at #NationalNightOut, an annual community event, making cotton candy for our residents to enjoy. He also mentored a student in our College & Career Readiness (CCR) program who was interested in entrepreneurship and said it was special for him to share his unique path to owning a business. Feeling inspired? Learn more about volunteering with us at www.ahcinc.org/volunteer.

Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, recently attended the 9th Annual Northern Virginia Regional Elected Leaders Summit with AHC staff members Jennifer Endo, Jennifer K. Smith, and Tyler Pearre. Kudos to the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, NVC, Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Loudoun Chamber, and Northern Virginia Regional Commission for hosting such a great event at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria campus. It was a great time connecting with peers and hearing from local elected leaders Libby Garvey, Arlington County Board Chair, Jeff McKay, Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Justin Wilson, Alexandria Mayor, and Juli Briskman, MBA, Vice Chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. And NBC reporter Joseph Olmo was a champion moderator!

AHC Teens celebrated all the fun they had in our College & Career Readiness Bootcamp with a meal at Buffalo Wild Wings and bowling and arcade games at Bowlero. It was a great summer full of career exploration, making connections, and learning more about potential paths after high school. We’re so proud of their commitment and effort throughout the summer!

Last Thursday was the last day of AHC Summer Camp. The kids learned a lot about bugs and all things wild with the “Where the Wild Things Are” theme. They improved their literacy and math skills, fostered friendships with fellow campers, went on exciting field trips, and had so much fun! A huge thank you to all of the summer program staff, volunteers, and Resident Services team members who made camp extra special for our young residents. Check out this video for a look at all the adventures.
