Last month, 17 AHC team members completed a CPR training and received their certifications. We’re proud to help equip our staff with skills to support residents in case of onsite emergencies. A big thanks to The Monumental Group for leading the training and providing lunch!
About us
Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is a community-focused, non-profit affordable housing developer. Since 1975, AHC Inc. has developed more than 50 apartment communities with more than 8,200 affordable apartments in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. AHC also provides extensive educational programs and social services onsite at our apartment communities to enhance residents’ lives – and the communities we serve. AHC prioritizes community-building, equity, and diversity throughout our organization - from thoughtful engagement with the residents we serve to long-time relationships with local government and community partners. Our outstanding real estate track record includes innovative development strategies, award-winning architectural design, cutting-edge environmental solutions, and long-time partnerships and quality developments that strengthen neighborhoods and local economies. AHC’s nationally recognized Resident Services program initiated nearly 30 years ago, is helping build stronger futures for more than 3,000 children, youth, and adults who live in our affordable housing communities through education programs, social services, community partnerships, and access to local support. Our team has earned the industry-leader CORES certification, which recognizes AHC’s ongoing commitment to the highest standards for resident services. Volunteer opportunities include working with elementary students in our Afterschool or Summer Program and teens in our Tutoring and College and Career Readiness Programs. We are proud that 100% of the students in our education programs have graduated from high school, with the majority going to college - most the first in their families to achieve this life-changing milestone. Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, spoke with Multi-Housing News about the importance of prioritizing affordability and health services in senior housing. The article also features guidance from industry expert Joanna Frank, the CEO of the Center for Active Design. In the article, Paul mentions the Health & Wellness Suite at MonteVerde, an AHC community in Baltimore, which provides critically needed substance misuse treatment services. Check out this sneak peek of Paul’s insights about the importance of tailoring services to each community: “In Baltimore, while senior Black men account for just 7 percent of Baltimore’s population, they account for about 30 percent of the city’s drug-related deaths," Paul said. "This is unacceptable—the MonteVerde community is proof that affordable housing can be more than a place to live, it can create pathways to better health outcomes.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/em4MS-Wg

Last week, Jeremy Diouf, a business owner and YouTuber, spoke with students in AHC’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) Bootcamp about his entrepreneurial experience. He shared insightful information about how he navigated his decision to pursue business instead of attending a four-year college, even when it wasn’t a popular choice among his family. The teens learned how he started his marketing and copywriting businesses and heard about his journey to over 180,000 subscribers on his psychology-focused YouTube channel. In CCR, we encourage our young residents to explore a variety of career paths. We’re glad Jeremy shared his unique path through education and business with the teens. A big thank you to Jeremy for the presentation!

Yesterday was National Ice Cream Day, and AHC celebrated with an ice cream social at one of our communities in Alexandria. Residents enjoyed ice cream sundaes while learning about how to register to vote from the League of Women Voters of Arlington and Alexandria City. At AHC, we believe residents are the experts of their own lives, know their strengths best, and are best positioned to determine what they need to live the lives they want to live. We want to help them tap into this power through civic engagement. Thank you to the League of Women Voters for sharing valuable resources with our residents!

Our July #PartnerSpotlight is here! ETC: Educational Theatre Company has been a partner with us for nearly 20 years. We’re grateful for all of the passion they bring to helping our residents tap into their creative sides. “From working with students each summer at all six Arlington locations to afterschool programming throughout the school year to hearing personal stories from adult residents of The Shell to inspire scenes and monologues, ETC finds endless community, collaboration, and creativity with AHC,” Katie McCreary, ETC Director of Development and Curriculum Development, said. Thank you, ETC, for years of fun with our residents!

Earlier this week, AHC hosted the July Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance (NVAHA) Leadership Council Meeting at our Arlington office. AHC leadership had an insightful conversation with other developers, corporate partners, and advocates in the affordable housing space on how to reach the region’s housing goals. Guest speaker Clark Mercer, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) Executive Director, shared how MWCOG is working to help drive the economy forward and improve the quality of life for residents in our region. The meeting was a great brainstorming session for how to collaborate more effectively with all levels of government to find affordable housing solutions. We left the conversation feeling inspired and excited for the future!
