Working every day means picking up scrapes and dings along the way. A multi-year deployment is a marathon that requires a durable and reliable robot.

Digit the robot joined #BrainstormTech live on stage in Park City, Utah. Agility Robotics CEO Peggy Johnson explained the reasoning behind Digit’s “backward” legs: “Knees get in the way of picking things up." Now, Digit is putting its backward-knees design, ten years in the making, to good use: The droid recently got hired at its first real job—picking up totes at a Spanx facility in Connecticut and putting them onto conveyors. The work is part of a multi-year deal with logistics provider GXO Logistics, Inc., and Johnson said the company is already getting monthly revenue from the robot-as-a-service project. Having a safe and reliable robot means Digit can join Peggy Johnson on stage for big events. Of course, the majority of our fleet is usually deployed at various customer sites, so it was nice to take a break and join Fortune at this year's #BrainstormTech event.

This is an awesome deep dive on humanoid robots by Kate Rooney. We are proud that Digit was the only robot performing live and on-demand for the CNBC crew.
AI-powered robots are popping up across Silicon Valley. If some industry experts are right, they could help solve a global labor shortage. Companies like Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia have plowed billions of dollars into what are known as “humanoid” robots. These machines typically stand on two legs, and are designed to perform tasks meant for people. For now, they’re being deployed in warehouses. But proponents say the possibilities extend well beyond fulfillment centers.
