Bidemi, a pregnant woman, was admitted to the Odeyinka Community Health Centre, a primary healthcare facility. On the day of her admission, she gave birth to a baby boy. Unfortunately, due to severe blood loss and the center’s lack of adequate medical equipment to manage her condition, she was referred to another hospital in Ikire town. Despite this transfer, Bidemi’s family was dissatisfied with her care at the second hospital. In a desperate bid to save her, her husband decided to take her to their hometown in Cotonou, Benin Republic, for better medical attention. Tragically, Bidemi passed away en route to Cotonou, one week after giving birth. Heartbreakingly, her newborn son also died three days later. Funke Okunnubi (not her real name), a Community Health Extension Worker at the Comprehensive PHC in Iwara, remarked wryly, “There’s nothing comprehensive about the PHC.” With just 2 beds spread across 3 wards, 3 CHEWs, and a chronic shortage of medical supplies, providing even basic services is a struggle. 🏥 “We often lack the necessary supplies and have to ask patients to return later. Referrals are rare unless cases are severe. In the past year, we've referred only 3 cases, all involving complicated childbirths,” Okunnubi explained. The situation is even grimmer at the Ajebamidele PHC, where there are no health workers on-site. Itunnu Ibidapo, a local patient, noted that the community had to hire a nurse for occasional visits. “What’s the point of a PHC in such a bad state without doctors or nurses? The community steps in, but without regular pay, the nurse can’t fully commit. Still, it's better than having no one,” Ibidapo added. The conditions at these PHCs highlight a critical healthcare crisis in Osun State, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and support. #HealthcareCrisis #OsunPHCs #CommunityHealthcare #PublicHealth #OsunState For a deeper insight into the challenges of accessing healthcare in Osun State, read this comprehensive report by Africa Data Hub, authored by Blessing Oladunjoye Read more: https://bit.ly/3x0uFHb

Four years after the Akarukpat Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Ekporoden began operations, it continues to struggle to meet its mission of providing quality, comprehensive, and affordable healthcare. The PHC faces severe staffing shortages, with only one health worker and a single bed. It lacks essential facilities and resources, including a doctor for routine visits, a pharmacy, medications, a nursing station, consulting rooms, wards, potable water, a fetal heart rate monitor, a working fridge for vaccines, a stretcher, oxygen for patients, and sufficient funding. Located near the Government’s Migrant and Technical College, the center has no internal water supply, relying solely on rainwater and a stream over two kilometers away, although it does have a storage tank.
