Three-time women's national championship-winning University of South Carolina Head Basketball Coach and Olympic legend Dawn Staley joined Aflac Senior Vice President of Group Voluntary Benefits Bob Ruff and members of the Aflac Nation to deliver My Special Aflac Duck® at Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. During the event, 16 pediatric sickle cell patients went on a scavenger hunt through the hospital before being surprised with their new My Special Aflac Duck. “After my first My Special Aflac Duck delivery last year, I wore a necklace crafted by a patient, serving as a constant reminder to maintain perspective in all situations. Aflac and I are deeply committed to giving back, particularly to children facing sickle cell—an often overlooked community," said Coach Staley. The social robotic duck uses innovative technology to help pediatric patients diagnosed with sickle cell disease or cancer prepare for medical procedures, communicate their feelings and practice distraction techniques. The sickle cell version of My Special Aflac Duck includes a special cape designed to mimic a blanket, reflecting the sensitivity of sickle cell patients to temperature changes. The cape also serves as art therapy, delighting children with its water-activated, color-changing canvas. Since My Special Aflac Duck was first introduced in 2018, nearly one-third of the 30,000 donated ducks have been given to children diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Aflac recently had the honor of hosting the Celebration of Courage Event for young patients and their families at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with Beads of Courage, a program dedicated to marking significant milestones in these children’s treatment journeys through the creation of beautiful bead necklaces, clips and bracelets. Eighteen Aflac employee volunteers helped patients select and design their beads, each representing a step in their courageous journey. The positivity and strength of the patients and their families left a lasting impact on our volunteers. Aflac Associate Talent Recruiter Jalisa shared, "It reminded me to be more mindful of being positive. Don’t take life for granted. Cherish every moment."
