Did you know that asteroids are considered minor planets? Whether they’re rocky, metallic, or both, asteroids can tell us a lot about our solar system. There are countless asteroids roaming the galaxy and we need your help finding them! ☄️ New images are uploaded each night to the Adler Zooniverse project The Daily Minor Planet for citizen scientists to find and classify new asteroids. 1st planetarium in the Western Hemisphere! 🔭 Look up with us. ⭐️ We're open!
About us
The Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether it is introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula, a neighborhood school to a community partner, a research team to a network of citizen scientists, or one staff member to another, the Adler’s focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century. The museum typically hosts more than half a million visitors each year and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, people-powered research, and other outreach efforts. Today, the Adler is bringing our unique approach—scientific exploration rooted in community and connection—to guests from around the world who can enjoy the digital Adler from their own homes, libraries, schools or offices. With the Adler’s support, people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities gain the confidence to explore their universe together and return to their communities ready to think critically and creatively about any challenge that comes their way. Keep looking up. We’re looking up with you.

How are ice giants made? Well, you start by unpacking them! 😉 With molten cores underneath their icy crusts, ice giants are frozen worlds that are far away from their respective Suns. We even have two in our very own celestial neighborhood, Neptune and Uranus! ❄️ You can learn more about gas giants and all their cousin planets in our new exhibit, Other Worlds—coming soon! ✨ #AdlerPlanetarium #ChicagoMuseum

We’re FAWN-ing over the full buck Moon! 🦌 July’s full Moon rises tonight, 7/20, but doesn’t reach its fullest point until 7/21, around 5am CDT. It is traditionally nicknamed the buck Moon as male deer’s antlers grow fast in July. Look up tonight to catch it! #AdlerPlanetarium #FullMoon #Astronomy

Our understanding of what other worlds would look like has been largely speculative for most of history. Could another planet be covered in lava? Could it rain glass? 🤔 Artist Chesley Bonestell took these speculations to the next level and created his own imaginings of other worlds. In this painting, Bonestell imagined what Saturn would look like from its moon, Titan. Frigid ice covers the rocky landscape and the chill of the atmosphere is illustrated in the surrounding sky. ❄️ Bonestell is often considered the founder of space art and is easily one of the most renowned science-fiction artists of the 20th century. His work takes on a stunning photorealistic quality that brings the viewer onto the planets that he imagined. 🪐 Now, thanks to high power telescopes, rovers, and other technology, we do know what other planetary surfaces look like, and some of Bonestell’s work wasn’t too far off! Come see this piece and learn more about real exoplanets for yourself in our new exhibit, Other Worlds—coming soon! ✨ #AdlerPlanetarium #MuseumCollections
