1st planetarium in the Western Hemisphere! 🔭 Look up with us. ⭐️ We're open!
About us
The Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether it is introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula, a neighborhood school to a community partner, a research team to a network of citizen scientists, or one staff member to another, the Adler’s focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century. The museum typically hosts more than half a million visitors each year and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, people-powered research, and other outreach efforts. Today, the Adler is bringing our unique approach—scientific exploration rooted in community and connection—to guests from around the world who can enjoy the digital Adler from their own homes, libraries, schools or offices. With the Adler’s support, people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities gain the confidence to explore their universe together and return to their communities ready to think critically and creatively about any challenge that comes their way. Keep looking up. We’re looking up with you.

🌟Look up alert!🌟 Mercury is back in the evening sky this month and tonight, 7/8, look up to the west for a chance to see it with the Moon just after sunset. If you’re lucky enough to have a really clear view to the western horizon, you may even briefly spot our neighbor, Venus! 🔭 #AdlerPlanetarium #Astronomy #Planetarium

A celebration in the stars! 🤩 When the skies are lighting up with fireworks tonight, remember that the cosmos are celebrating with their very own stellar light shows. Wishing everyone in the Milky Way and beyond a happy #IndependenceDay! 🎉 [ 📷: The Firework Nebula, the remnants of Nova Persei 1901. NASA/ Chandra X-ray Observatory ] #AdlerPlanetarium #Astronomy

Get your rocket popsicles ready, we're launching into July at the speed of light! Be sure to catch some of this month’s stellar stargazing sights! 🚀 ☀️ On 7/5, Earth reaches aphelion—AKA the farthest point in its orbit from the Sun. Even though we’re 3 million miles farther from the Sun than we were in January, it won’t affect the summer heat. 🪐 Several planets will be visible this month: Jupiter returns, Mars and Saturn shine bright, and lucky stargazers may even get a Mercury sighting! 🌝 The full buck Moon rises on 7/21, reaching its peak at 5:17 am CDT. ✨ Mars and Jupiter reach a conjunction on 7/31, appearing only 6 degrees apart in the early morning sky. Find out everything you need to know for stargazing in July 2024 on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gkuW_Cpy #AdlerPlanetarium #Astronomy #SkyObserving

Collect them all! ✨ While not the most rare or oldest pieces in our collection, these pins highlight a unique moment in American culture. From the 1950s–70s, the American zeitgeist was marked by the ambitious goal of space exploration. 🚀 Organizations like NASA worked hard to make everyday Americans feel invested in these programs—and it worked! These pins symbolize the cultural buy-in to the missions. To this day, space exploration remains an important part of American history and culture. Have you seen any of these pins before? 🤔 #AdlerPlanetarium #AstronomyLovers

⚠️STELLAR CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ⚠️ The whole team is busy at work on our new exhibit, Other Worlds! Globes and meteorites are moving, graphics are being installed, and of course the Star had to get in on some of the action! ✨ (Don’t worry, the Star is not allowed to actually touch anything important.) #AdlerPlanetarium #ChicagoMuseum

Tastes like strawberries on a summer evening! 🎶 The first full Moon of the summer rises tonight, 6/21, reaching its peak around 8:07 pm CDT. 🌕 Its name, the full strawberry Moon, marks the season when strawberries typically reach peak ripeness. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the nickname was used by Native American tribes that live in the northeastern United States to identify strawberry gathering season. 🍓 #AdlerPlanetarium #Astronomy
