As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Bretton Woods Conference, it's crucial to reflect on the financial systems that have shaped our world and how they can evolve to meet today's challenges. Our Executive Director, Niranjali Amerasinghe, Bretton Woods Project's Jon Sward, and independent consultant, Lara Merling, highlight the urgent need for reform in global finance to ensure it is more equitable and just. Their insightful op-ed underscores the importance of rethinking our financial structures to better address the inequalities exacerbated by current economic frameworks. 🔗 Read the full article to explore why now is the time for transformative change and how we can build a financial system that works for everyone 👉 https://lnkd.in/esqDNeh5 #BrettonWoods80 #SDRsNow #GlobalCrisisRelief

Humanitarian workers in Gaza are, against the odds and in the face of constant danger, still providing desperately needed support amidst severe shortages of food, fuel, and key supplies. ActionAid's Advocacy and Communications Coordinator in Palestine, Riham Jafari, said: “Our staff and partners in Gaza are going to extraordinary lengths to deliver vital aid despite being forced to work in near-impossible conditions and fearing for their own safety. Again and again, over the last nine months, they have been forced to adapt their response as circumstances rapidly change, proving themselves to be remarkably flexible and creative when it comes to serving their communities. The bravery and resilience of our partners in the face of utterly unimaginable conditions is just astonishing, but no one should have to work like this. More aid must be allowed into Gaza, and there must be a permanent ceasefire, now.” Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/da2MD5_8

This summer, ActionAid USA joined more than 100 climate justice and human rights organizations to launch a months-long civil disobedience campaign at Citi headquarters in New York. Last week, Citi made targeted false accusations in three separate incidents against protesters engaged in peaceful civil disobedience against Citi’s funding for fossil fuel expansion. Citi also asked a judge for a temporary restraining order against two individuals it perceived to be leaders of the campaign, clearly intent on silencing protesters at its headquarters. We condemn Citi’s action and urge anyone who can come to New York City on Saturday, July 27, at 11:00 a.m. to join the big march that will start at Citibank’s HQ. We aim to send a clear message to Citi: it’s time to #endfossilfuels investments. 🗓️: Saturday, July 27 🕚: 11:00 a.m. 📍: Citibank’s HQ, NYC Our Senior Policy Analyst, Doug Hertzler, shares more 👉 https://lnkd.in/e9Qx4JVz

ActionAid USA condemns Citi’s recent actions aimed at criminalizing peaceful climate protests organized by the #SummerofHeat campaign. Since June 10, thousands of activists have engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience at Citi’s global headquarters, demanding an end to the bank’s financing of fossil fuel projects that exacerbate the #climatecrisis. We stand in solidarity with the Summer of Heat campaign activists, who call for accountability and transformative change in addressing the climate emergency. As the International Monetary Fund (IMF) marks its 80th anniversary, it's crucial to reflect on its impact on global economies. Despite its original mission, the IMF's policies have often exacerbated debt crises in developing countries, leading to austerity measures that stifle growth and deepen poverty. This thought-provoking op-ed from ActionAid's Secretary General, Arthur Larok, argues that it's time to abolish the IMF and replace it with a fairer, more equitable financial system that prioritizes human rights and sustainable development and uplifts rather than oppresses. Read the full op-ed to explore this vision for economic justice and the compelling case for abolishing the IMF 👉 https://lnkd.in/dRhM84be #IMF80 #debtcrisis #economicjustice

The consolidation of corporate power in the livestock industry poses significant threats to small farmers and consumers. As large corporations dominate the market, small farmers struggle to compete, leading to reduced choices and higher prices for consumers. This imbalance not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of farmers but also undermines the sustainability of our food system. It's essential to support policies that promote fair competition and protect the interests of small farmers. Explore the impact of corporate consolidation on livestock farmers and the steps we can take to address this critical issue 👉 https://bit.ly/4d33MSb FarmRights

Our Director of Policy and Campaigns, Brandon Wu, recently spoke to TRT World's "Just 2 Degrees" presenter and Environmental Journalist Reagan Des Vignes about advocating for the debt-free, no-strings-attached nature of the #LossAndDamage Fund at its first board meeting. He said: “We've been challenging them over and over again saying what we're setting up here is a fund it is not a bank; it is not a business there is not a profit-seeking endeavor. All that we’re trying to do here is move money from the rich countries of the world to vulnerable communities who really need those resources to cope with #climatechange. The whole idea that we have a business model kind of sends the wrong signal…it has the wrong implications…it sort of implies that what we're trying to set up here is a bank where maybe we want to make some loans and get paid back, and that's really not the Spirit of what we want to be establishing here." “Our partners in Gaza paint a harrowing picture of the current situation, with pregnant women losing their babies because they are so malnourished and desperate mothers struggling to find anything to feed their starving children. This is a stain on humanity’s conscience and an entirely preventable, human-made crisis. The world cannot sit back and watch any more children die from lack of food: more life-saving aid must be allowed into Gaza immediately.” Ireland’s CEO, Karol Balfe, on Gaza’s devastating food and health crises.
