The NORDCAN group reveals how the many improvements in Nordic cancer care, e.g. diagnostic pathways, screening program and new treatment options, has improved survival for patients with cancer. Based on population data from 2.9 million patients with cancer survival improvements across countries, cancer types, and age groups are presented. Five-year relative survival has improved up to 21 percentage points for all cancer types and up to 44 percentage points for individual cancer types such as kidney cancer. The report provides positive support for a clinical benefit from the strategic and structured work performed in the Nordic countries with e.g. cancer plans, screening programs, cancer paths for rapid diagnostics, introduction of new treatment principles and quality follow-up and improvements in cancer care. https://lnkd.in/dUqgJpmN

Preparing for colorectal cancer surgery ten Cate et al. provide real-world evidence from prehabilitation in colorectal surgery. After 3-4 weeks of multimodal prehabilitation, the study demonstrates enhanced physical fitness with particular improvement of aerobic capacity. Improvements were observed regardless of baseline values, though the least fit patients benefitted most. The study lend further support to consideration of the prehabilitation concept in colorectal cancer treatment. https://lnkd.in/dpwXMR_D

Rare cancers in a remote setting  The Faroe Islands has an independent cancer registry and in this study reports incidence and survival for children with cancer during a 60-year time period. This study demonstrates how research and improved clinical diagnosis and treatment has translated to better outcome for children in the Faroe Islands. Survival has doubled during the period – a case for benefit from science through collaborative networks that make a difference also in one of the most remote areas of the Nordic countries. https://lnkd.in/dvDggeQS
