As health IT innovations advance at a rapid pace, enhancing patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) data infrastructure is more critical than ever. A new report from the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) highlights 36 projects funded by the Office of the Secretary’s Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund (#OSPCORTF) that are building data capacity, expanding longitudinal data resources, leveraging technology to advance research, and advancing person-centeredness, inclusion, and equity. Great example of how the AcademyHealth community can gather around shared expertise and experience to advance state-level policy! 🙏
I am so excited, and yes proud, of the growth and accomplishments of SUPLN. What was initially nurtured under the leadership of Enrique Martinez-Vidal has grown into a highly successful and sought-after network thanks to Susan Kennedy and her stellar team. As someone who worked for 11 years at the state level in Hawaii, Florida, and Ohio, I know first hand the value of state university based researchers to state policy and the critical role peer networks play in supporting individual state actors. I am so pleased that what we started in 2014 thanks to an investment by our Board of Directors has become so valuable to states and universities, and ultimately, to improving care. Conducting health services research requires access to longitudinal data on a variety of health care topics. Funded by the Office of the Secretary’s Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund (#OSPCORTF), projects are working to strengthen data infrastructure by addressing data needs for priority topic areas, developing data standards and data linkage methods, improving data access and interoperability, and building capacity for generating patient-centered evidence. Sherry Glied, the chair of the second plenary session "Research During Polarized Times" at #ARM24 opened by noting there’s never been a non-polarized time in health policy and summarized the importance of: 1. Partnerships, especially with those you don’t naturally gravitate towards 2. Published papers are important, but researchers usually have something that goes beyond what’s published. 3. Being ready for the moment. You have to have the research ready so that you can present it at a time when people can listen and receive it. 4. Local, real-world data as opposed to more generalizable work. Panelists Sandro Galea, Emma Sandoe, PhD, MPH, Benjamin D. Sommers, and B. Cameron Webb, MD, JD also offered the following takeaways: 1. Talk about success stories 2. Individual papers can only go so far – you need to show a body of work 3. You can impact policy inside and outside government 4. Humans learn based on stories. We have to get better at telling stories about research Here’s what you can do: 1. Learn about your state agencies 2. Reach out when you have research 3. Network to make cross connections between federal, state, and academic institutions See you at the closing plenary today 12:15pm!
