We’re pleased to announce that Sheryl Woodruff, CFRE, a nonprofit leader who has served humanities and community-based organizations in both programmatic and fundraising roles, has joined us as our new Director of Development. “This is a thrilling time for our organization and for poetry as we celebrate ninety years of serving as a home for the meaningful communion between poets and readers. With the announcement of our largest philanthropic award ever to support the work that civic poets and poetry organizations undertake across communities, as well as new partnerships to bolster K–12 education programs, we look forward to another ninety years of service to our growing communities. In partnership with 826 National, we're thrilled to present Dear Poet 2024, the Academy of American Poets' annual multimedia project that invites young students to write letters in response to poems written and read by award-winning poets. Participating poets this year include Academy Chancellors Marilyn Chin, Nikky Finney, Ed Roberson, and Patricia Smith. And for the first time in its nine year history, Dear Poet includes a series of poems in both English and Spanish, encouraging participation by bilingual readers. “Poetry pushes us to be brave when sharing our own stories,” said Ricardo Maldonado, Academy President & Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with 826 National to bring students a chance to correspond with living poets and ask questions about how poems speak to experiences of our many communities and the world we live in. We’re grateful to all the teachers who use the program and for each and every student letter we receive.” We’re accepting submissions beginning today, January 11, through April 22, 2024 for #NationalPoetryMonth.
