About us
In partnership with industry, the ABA sets national standards for the basic skills and underpinning knowledge required to safely operate workplace transport equipment in line with all relevant, current legislation and approved codes of practice for the benefit of industry. The ABA's mission is to contribute to an increase in workplace transport productivity and profitability whilst also reducing workplace incidents, injuries and deaths. The ABA has robust membership criteria and each member is independently audited and measured against the criteria. We hold an annual summit to gather feedback and input from the industry. Regulators (including the HSE), trade associations and industry stakeholders attend our events and quarterly meetings. In 2023, more than 88,000 training certificates were issued by ABA accrediting bodies for Counterbalance Forklift Trucks (ABA Categories: B1, B2, B3, B4). This comprised: Novice, experienced, and conversion training – 43,755 Refresher training – 44,284 These certificates issued by ABA members represent the majority of all lift truck training delivered in the UK. In addition, we ensure that Training Providers have appropriate Insurance, up-to-date training records (kept for minimum of 6 years or held electronically), and systems and policies in place to comply with all applicable data protection laws and rules. What is the difference between Rough Terrain and Industrial machines? Why does it matter? The correct certification of a vehicle impacts on safety, as an operator needs to be trained to use the correct equipment. Testing and grouping categorisation helps the employer to confirm what certificate of basic training has been obtained by the operator.
