Today is National Disability Independence Day! In the United States, July 26 marks the annual recognition of National Disability Independence Day, commemorating the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. Introduced in 1988, the ADA builds on the progress of the Rehabilitation Act. July is a time to celebrate Disability Pride. Did you know 1 in 4 Americans identifies as disabled? Mental health conditions can be both a disability and a result of living with a disability. Globally, people with disabilities make up 15% of the population, representing all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. This month, we honor the identities, culture, and contributions of people with disabilities. Let's recognize that disability is a natural part of human diversity. While we've made progress, there is still more to do for true equality. Let's continue pushing for inclusion, accessibility, and support for all. #DisabilityPride #ADA #Inclusion #Accessibility #SupportForAll #MakeAnImpact

It is crucial to address how racism impacts the health of communities of color. Racism is a system of structures and policies that unfairly advantages some while disadvantaging others, significantly affecting millions. To build a healthier America, we must confront and dismantle these systems of injustice. The CDC is committed to leading this effort through national health initiatives and internal practices. Research shows that racism influences where people live, learn, work, and play, creating health disparities in housing, education, wealth, and employment. Data indicates that racial and ethnic minority groups in the U.S. face higher rates of illness and death across various conditions compared to White Americans, with the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighting these disparities. This BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, let's commit to understanding and addressing the impact of racism on our nation's health. As we continue to honor BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, let's highlight advancements in mental health care benefiting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. A recent study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) found that a collaborative care approach significantly reduces PTSD symptoms among racial and ethnic minority patients in real-world settings. This team-based, patient-centered method was especially effective at the six-month mark post-injury, addressing mental health disparities and improving outcomes for trauma survivors.
