We need policymakers to FinishTheFight to reign in the middlemen! “PBM and brand pharmaceutical rebating practices ... urgently warrant further scrutiny and potential regulation."
The Federal Trade Commission this morning released an interim report, titled "Pharmacy Benefit Managers: The Powerful Middlemen Inflating Drug Costs and Squeezing Main Street Pharmacies," as part of its ongoing inquiry into PBMs that it launched in 2022. The report refers to the more than 24,000 comments the agency received from the public during its probe, including from many independent pharmacists. While praising the FTC's findings thus far, we're reiterating the need for further investigation into PBM-insurers (including the FTC's pursuit of information that the PBMs have so far withheld) and for policymakers to #FinishTheFight and finalize reforms that will rein them in. "Without question – and as the interim report makes clear – the marketplace has exploded because of countless mergers and acquisitions as well as tactics like patient steering and take-it-or-leave-it contracting," NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey says. "It’s a system that may work for massive PBM middlemen, but it’s anti-consumer and anticompetitive."
