826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students with their writing skills.
About us
826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages six to eighteen with their writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our work is based on the understanding that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success and that great leaps in learning can happen when trained tutors work one-on-one with students. 826 Valencia was founded by author Dave Eggers and educator Ninive Calegari.

We were thrilled to partner with University of San Francisco students in the "Artist as Citizen" course on this new mural outside our Tenderloin Center! USF students and faculty gathered input from 826 Valencia and other community organizations in the Tenderloin to create this beautiful new addition to our block. 🎨 🐡

Excited about our new mural in the TL! 🐡 🐻
A new mural, created by University of San Francisco students in Sergio De La Torre’s "Artist as Citizen" course, has been installed outside of 826 Valencia’s Tenderloin Center! While designing the mural, USF students and faculty gathered input from 826 Valencia and other community organizations in the Tenderloin. They incorporated our ideas, including student writing and themes from each of our centers, to highlight the awesome work transpiring in the neighborhood. A big thank you to our neighbors in the Tenderloin and all the staff and students who made this possible, as well as our community partners: the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, Larkin Street Youth Services, LSS of Northern California, St. Anthony Foundation, Wu Yee Children's Services, De Marillac Academy, Mercy Housing, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Code Tenderloin, and the San Francisco Planning Department. Please invite your friends, family, and colleagues to see this fantastic piece on Golden Gate Avenue and Leavenworth Street. Take lots of photos, and spread the word. Let's celebrate this amazing work together, in community! “The fairy is around everyone. The fairy wants you to be kind.“ — Sophie Gin, age 8

Meet our new Writers' Room at Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School in the Bayview! Our friends at WRNS Studio drew inspiration from our student authors to create this imaginative space that fosters creativity, collaboration, and joy. 🦒 ☁️ Our expansion to Charles Drew is part of our 3-year growth plan to reach more students in elementary schools across SF. 🏫 🎒 Thank you to these folks for supporting the project: Novo Construction Gugel & Today Boyett Construction 📸 by Celso Rojas

Last month, our young authors saw their published work for the first time, autographed books for their fans and friends, and waved farewell to our staff and tutors for the summer. ☀️ ✨ Congratulations to the newly-published authors! If you want to explore our new publications, visit our stores in the Mission and Mission Bay. 📚 📝
