About us

826 National amplifies the impact of our national network of youth writing and publishing centers, and the words of young authors. We serve as an international proof point for writing as a tool for young people to ignite and channel their creativity, explore identity, advocate for themselves and their community, and achieve academic and professional success. We work towards a country in which the power and the joy of writing is accessible to every student in every classroom. The 826 Network serves over 700,000 students ages 6 to 18 each year via 826 Digital and through nine chapters: 826 Boston, 826CHI, 826DC, 826LA, 826michigan, 826 MSP, 826 New Orleans, 826NYC, and 826 Valencia. This work is possible thanks to the support of almost 5,000 volunteers. Each chapter has an imaginative storefront that reimagines tutoring as anything but traditional; provides a gateway for meeting families, teachers, and volunteers; and connects students with community members. And of course, sells student publications. In addition, there are over 50 organizations around the world inspired by the 826 model collectively serving an additional 150,000 students. 826 National is the hub of the 826 Network: facilitating collaboration and alignment among our chapters, and bringing the 826 Network model and approach to new communities. Together, we believe writing is the key to cultivating a new generation of creative and diverse thinkers who will define a better, brighter, and more compassionate future.

We’re so proud and excited to see @826michigan students featured at the Detroit Historical Museum.  Their exhibit “Stories in Stereo” showcases almost 80 original student stories from 826michigan’s first audiobook of the same name. Fifth graders from University Prep Mark Murray interviewed family members, friends, and one another to write and record stories on what it’s like to live in Detroit today. Meet some of the young writers who are part of the exhibit! Watch 826michigan students Langston P., Serenity B., Nyla N., share why writing is important to them with Fox 2 Detroit at https://lnkd.in/gMhUNcRN and https://lnkd.in/g28DjxeN. Read about Eleazar-Yisrael S. who is featured in side-by-side exhibits with his father in the Detroit Free Press at bit.ly/49xlL1F. If you're in the Detroit area, you can check out the exhibit from now until March 14!

Chat GPT was released one year ago and to reflect on how it has impacted writing education and our work, we’re sharing 826’s Position Statement on Generative AI. This statement shares 826’s ethos with the public that writing is as much about the process as about the product itself. With the release of ChatGPT and similar AI technologies, writing educators worry that this new technology may signal the end of writing instruction altogether. However, at 826, we believe that writing is an irreplaceable tool in cultivating citizens who can advocate for themselves and their community. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to say hello, joined us at our panel, "Blazing a New Path," signed up for #826Digital, and bought books written by 826 students at this year's National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Conference. We had a record number of #826Digital signups and book sales! We're so thrilled to be part of this community and to be able to share young writers' words and 826's approach to writing with educators everywhere!
