About us

826 National amplifies the impact of our national network of youth writing and publishing centers, and the words of young authors. We serve as an international proof point for writing as a tool for young people to ignite and channel their creativity, explore identity, advocate for themselves and their community, and achieve academic and professional success. We work towards a country in which the power and the joy of writing is accessible to every student in every classroom. The 826 Network serves over 700,000 students ages 6 to 18 each year via 826 Digital and through nine chapters: 826 Boston, 826CHI, 826DC, 826LA, 826michigan, 826 MSP, 826 New Orleans, 826NYC, and 826 Valencia. This work is possible thanks to the support of almost 5,000 volunteers. Each chapter has an imaginative storefront that reimagines tutoring as anything but traditional; provides a gateway for meeting families, teachers, and volunteers; and connects students with community members. And of course, sells student publications. In addition, there are over 50 organizations around the world inspired by the 826 model collectively serving an additional 150,000 students. 826 National is the hub of the 826 Network: facilitating collaboration and alignment among our chapters, and bringing the 826 Network model and approach to new communities. Together, we believe writing is the key to cultivating a new generation of creative and diverse thinkers who will define a better, brighter, and more compassionate future.

826 National CEO Laura Brief and 826DC Board member Miah Daughtery recently sat down with NWEA's *Teach. Learn. Grow.* Education blog for an in-depth conversation on how 826 National and our nine chapters across the U.S. empower young writers and elevate the national dialogue on writing. In this article, they explore topics ranging from tapping into student motivation, to creating welcoming third spaces, to providing meaningful audiences for youth writing. As Miah says—allowing students to be their vulnerable selves, helping them put words to paper, and letting them bravely tell their stories can be magic—and we couldn’t agree more. 🪄 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gB3SBvfV

Once again, we are captivated by the brilliance of Amanda Gorman’s words, spoken on a national stage to celebrate a historic moment—the nomination of the first Black woman as a United States presidential candidate. ✨️ Amanda embodies 826 National’s mission: the power and vision of young people to shape their futures, their communities, and our country. Every day, through 826 programming across the nation, young people are doing just that—using their voices, their words, and their writing to create a brighter future. Today, perhaps they are dreaming even more boldly, inspired by the example Amanda sets. Here’s to Amanda. To dreaming. To bravery. To the collective work ahead. And to the words and voices of young people everywhere. ✍️✨ Photo credit: Andrew Caballero-Reynolds—AFP/Getty Images #826National #AmandaGorman #YouthVoice #DreamBoldly #WritingMatters #Inspiration #BrighterFuture Amanda G.

826 partner authors like Elizabeth Acevedo, Khaled Hosseini, Jason Reynolds, Jacqueline Woodson, and even 826 National co-founder Dave Eggers are being banned in classrooms and libraries across America. Hundreds of artists, illustrators, and translators have been targeted in the last year alone. Our students deserve better. Across the country, a minority is being allowed to decide whose stories are acceptable, censoring diverse voices and impacting how young people view their own stories, identities, and place in classrooms and this country. At 826, we stand in this ongoing fight for the freedom to read and write, to actively defend students, their future, and their stories, and to advocate for a more affirming and supportive education system. We’re proud to share Dave Eggers’ documentary, To Be Destroyed, which explores the effects of book bans through the eyes of students and teachers. Premiering at Tribeca and airing on MSNBC, the film captures the powerful responses to these censorship efforts. #826Network #DaveEggers #MSNBC #ToBeDestroyed #bookban #bannedbooks #censorship

Sharing a little milestone in my 'life after college' journey! Back in May, I took a leap into the freelancing world, and it's been an incredible experience so far. One of my first clients was an organization called 826 Dallas Project 🌟 The 826 chapters are the largest youth writing network that provides young students access to writing education and resources. The most empowering thing about the 826 Network is that they PUBLISH these young writers and give them a space to find their creativity in the writing process. 📚✍ This past weekend, I attended the book launch of The Secret World of Monsters, a collection of stories created by first and second graders from West Dallas. I had the opportunity to design the book cover as well as create promotional materials for the event. Not only was I able to see one of my designs come to life, but seeing the students' faces as they picked up the book and turned the pages to their stories was incredibly heartwarming and encouraging. Dr. Daphne Moriel de Cedeno and Cynthia Perez, thank you so much for the opportunity to help bring the book vision to life! Through our collaboration, I have found a great passion for the nonprofit world and am now looking forward to working with other impactful clients and projects such as this one. 💌 826 National www.826DallasProject.org

A couple weeks ago, we had the pleasure of traveling to Los Angeles for our annual Staff Development Conference, hosted by 826 National! We spent the week connecting with other staff members across the 826 Network, and being present in a variety of professional development sessions that dove deep into all aspects of our work - from publishing student writing to leadership management! Thank you to 826 National (and 826LA!) for being such great hosts! #826Network #20YearsOf826NYC #826SDC24
