At The Zone, we’ve recognized something crucial in our work with athletes—male athletes often internalize their struggles, and it’s not talked about enough. As former athletes and men ourselves, Erik and I have experienced those silent battles firsthand. That’s why I’m especially proud to see this initiative led by Erik Poldroo, designed specifically to help male athletes on campuses open up about their mental health challenges.
Our vision has always been to revolutionize mental health in sports, and with partnerships like this, we’re making that vision a reality, one step at a time.
"This collaboration between The Zone, MEN'S X MENTAL, and UNC Asheville hits close to home for me. I know what it’s like to face the pressures of college sports without the right support. Together, we’re building a safe, empowering environment for male student-athletes to talk, share, and get the help they need to thrive—not just as athletes, but as people. This is the kind of support I wish I had during my playing days." – Erik Poldroo, COO & Co-Founder of The Zone
Head Baseball Coach Scott Friedholm from UNC Asheville also shared how important this initiative is for his team:
"This is a unique opportunity for our male athletes to come together, open up, and realize that, no matter the sport they play or their backgrounds, they’re not alone. These shared stories and struggles can unite them, creating a stronger, more resilient community both on and off the field."
This collaboration is not just a one-time event—it’s a movement we hope other schools will join. Together, we’re reshaping the conversation around mental health in sports, helping male athletes break the silence and build a culture of support and understanding. The results are already powerful, and we’re excited to bring this initiative to campuses nationwide. If you are interested in bringing this on your campus, let us know.
