2LIPP - 2nd Life for Power Plants
Renewable Energy Power Generation
We will accelerate the green transition by adding state-of-the-art energy storage technologies to existing power plants.
About us
The 2LIPP Horizon project will accelerate the green transition by adding state-of-the-art energy storage technologies to existing power plants enabling them to turn fluctuating renewable energy supple into stable, reliable energy supply. In the 2LIPP project on the Energy Island of Bornholm, cutting-edge energy storage technologies and an innovative energy management system will be demonstrated side-by-side inside an operating combined heat and power plant. The purpose is to showcase a scalable, hybrid energy storage solution utilizing existing plant infrastructure, thereby achieving lower cost to deploy energy storage. In doing so, the innovative European partners in the 2LIPP project will demonstrate a proof-of-concept for a disruptive approach to transitioning traditional power plants and combined heat and power plants to be able to operate effectively in a renewable energy grid. The unique technologies Start-up company HYME will deliver a first-of-a-kind high temperature hydroxide salt energy storage for combined heat and power production, demonstrating long-duration grid-scale energy storage. Battery storage consisting of used car batteries from PLS Energy Systems and a high-tech Flywheel from QuinteQ will deliver short duration energy storage. Tied together by a hybrid energy management system from PINI Solutions, the entire storage system will balance the grid and provide stored energy when needed. The project is located at BEOF facility in Rønne, Bornholm. The 2LIPP project will: • Meet the need of utility owners to phase out fossil fuels and phase down biomass without the risk of losing grid stability and security of supply • Enable deployment of a low-cost-high-efficiency energy storage technologies to accelerate storage take-up. • Enable renewable energy storage to provide short- and long-term supply stability to the grid, thus helping European countries integrate more renewable energy without a risk of black-outs.

💡Knowledge sharing is key💡 As a Horizon Europe project, 2LIPP - 2nd Life for Power Plants is part of #BRIDGE which is a European Commission initiative that unites Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe Smart Grid, Energy Storage, Islands, and Digitalisation Projects. The purpose is to create a structured view of cross-cutting issues that are encountered in the demonstration projects and may constitute an obstacle to innovation. The BRIDGE process fosters continuous knowledge sharing amongst projects, thus allowing them to deliver conclusions and recommendations about the future exploitation of the project results, with a single voice, through different working groups. Last week, Chiara Cecchin from Euroheat & Power/DHC Platform presented the 2LIPP project to the members of the working group ’Strategies of Engagements’. Knowledge sharing is valuable in innovation projects, and we are happy to be part of this group where we can contribute with our knowledge and learn from others. ✨As we wrap up 2023, we are already looking forward to 2024 in the 2LIPP project✨ Since the partners embarked on their journey a year ago, they have been working on preparing the site, collecting data and developing the essential technologies that will be applied. 🌱The project will demonstrate how three technologies can be combined in the solution: A flywheel provided by QuinteQ Energy , recycled lithium-ion batteries provided by PLS Energy Systems AB and molten salt storage provided by Hyme. 🚛At the beginning of the new year, the battery will be the first to arrive on-site at Bornholms Energi & Forsyning in Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm followed by the flywheel and finally, the molten salt storage. “We are excited to see the project take shape as we hope, that by reusing existing power plant infrastructure, together with the competence of the power plant operators, we can extend the life of older CHP plants while maintaining their key role in security of supply as a back-up to solar and wind. 2024 will be an interesting year for the project. We will have the first technologies, the second life batteries, and the flywheel, physically on our site and can start testing and demonstrating the 2LiPP concept in practice,” Marjo Lahtimo, Project Manager at Bornholms Energi & Forsyning, says. 👉Learn more about the project on our website: https://2lipp.eu/ We wish you all happy holidays!🤗 Stay tuned for more 2LIPP updates in 2024. Energy storage is crucial to reaching our carbon emission goals🔋🌱 For a society mainly powered by energy from solar panels and wind turbines, we need to develop effective storage technologies. These technologies will accelerate the decarbonisation of the industry, ensure a reliable green transition of the energy supply and contribute to cheap, green power and heat for industry, offices and homes. Last week, the two 2LIPP - 2nd Life for Power Plants partners, Bornholms Energi & Forsyning and Hyme, got to talk about the 2LIPP project at the ‘Advanced Energy Storage’ conference in Aarhus, Denmark, hosted by Danish Technological Institute. At the conference, technologies, demonstration activities and analysis of a flexible energy system focusing on electrical and thermal energy storage were discussed. Jörgen Edström from Bornholms Energi & Forsyning presented the 2LIPP project and discussed why energy storage is interesting for heat and power plants. Nis Benn from Hyme spoke about fossil-free heat production for industry and combined heat and power.
