Business experts play a crucial role from the outset, identifying which problems are worth addressing. Business experts, with their deep understanding of organizational goals and challenges, are best positioned to identify the crucial variables that impact the desired outcomes. Their insights ensure that the data selected is relevant, clean, and well-organized, setting the stage for effective model training and accurate results. Instead of aiming for moon shots, focusing on small, incremental goals builds trust in ML models and yields tangible benefits. By setting well-defined goals, teams can strategically measure their accomplishments, fostering accountability and guiding their efforts towards successful ML projects.

While most of the people would try to look for goal in terms of model performance, remember that meeting business goal & outcomes in critical for any machine learning project to be successful. Ask questions on what problem we are trying to solve, how do they capture this in current process, do they even have enough data? A well defined goal, coupled with thorough data understanding, a clear vision of outcomes, robust evaluation metrics along with stakeholder alignment forms the foundation for a successful machine learning project.

In ML, success hinges on setting a precise goal that outlines the desired outcome, such as improving accuracy, reducing error rates, or optimizing a specific metric. This goal should be specific to the problem domain, measurable in terms of performance metrics, achievable with the available data and resources, relevant to the project's objectives, and time-bound to provide a sense of urgency and direction. Experiment with diverse algorithms, considering strengths and weaknesses. 5. Validate models using robust techniques like cross-validation. 6. Interpret results, refining features and algorithms as needed. 7. Collaborate with domain experts to ensure alignment with business goals. 8. Document the process for reproducibility. These steps enhance the likelihood of delivering valuable insights and actionable outcomes.

Software engineering has benefited enormously from agile development, as compared to the previously dominant practice of waterfall development. The main principles are that you optimize for the speed of learning, "failing" quickly as you develop iteratively and incrementally. The same principle applies to ML, but it can be harder if your project seems to require a lot upfront work for tasks like collecting data collection or setting up infrastructure. Nonetheless, it pays to be agile. That can mean doing throw-away work just to learn something that can de-risk the project or help you make a key design decision sooner rather than later. Optimizing for the speed of human learning is key to successfully delivering machine learning projects.

When communicating, keep it simple! No need to use fancy terminologies. Present it in a way where it's clear and concise! Use charts and visualizations to help the audience understand the findings. It's also helpful to know your target audience before presenting so you could tailor your responses in a way that is insightful and digestible to all.

In my experience, below are the basic level considerations to ensure any new Machine Learning project to be successful. 1. Understand the business needs, where a Machine Learning can add value. 2. Define a problem statement which helps in setting clear objectives. 3. Assess whether the problem can be solved using simpler techniques and no need to use Machine Learning techniques, which can save time and resources. 4. Understand whether the project is short-term or long-term, which helps in planning and setting timelines. 5. Develop a Proof of Concept to understand the technical feasibility, potential challenges and expected Return on Investment of the project, before fully implementing the project.
