You’re teaching a virtual course. How can you keep students engaged?

Giving a clear roadmap is very important for an Online course to be effective. A teacher needs to be very clear about the course contents, resources used and to be shared, evaluation methods and means of getting to know each other and be connected should be known to all. For an effective online learning student teacher intercation becomes crucial. And for this both the parties need to know their strengths and limitations. Strengths such as ability to work alone and in teams, doing some prior readings and research or weaknesses such as connectivity issues, inability to focus or lose track of assignments and projects. Setting clear expectations can help students work with their strengths and weaknesses. Clear communication always works!

Incorporate interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, and games to break up the monotony of lectures and keep students actively participating. Use visual aids like slides, videos, and animations to enhance comprehension and engagement. Visuals can help reinforce key concepts and make the content more memorable. Facilitate group discussions, collaborative projects, or breakout sessions where students can work together to solve problems or discuss course material. This fosters peer interaction and creates a sense of community in the virtual classroom. Relate course material to real-life examples or case studies to make it more relevant and relatable to students' experiences.

To keep students engaged in a virtual course, I would employ a variety of interactive teaching methods, such as live polls, quizzes, and discussions to encourage active participation. If I was teaching an online course I'd lean into a discussion board and guide the discussion by "calling" on students so that they are expected to contribute by responding to me and not being on their own to contribute to the discussion. This would be similar to an in person experience where students would be "called on" to answer a question or give their perspective.

Each case study can be complemented by thought-provoking questions to foster critical thinking and practical application of course concepts. Utilizing discussion forums in the LMS can create a dynamic space for students to exchange insights and viewpoints. You can organize the class into teams, each tackling a distinct project, or let students suggest projects aligned with their interests and course goals. Providing guidance and assistance during these projects promotes engagement and confirms students' grasp of the material. Project-based learning underscores the importance of using learned concepts and abilities in a practical way, enhancing the significance and appeal of the learning experience for students.

Use the "me-you-we" approach. Instead of long lectures or product demonstrations, try to limit your doing to about 1 third of the time. Instead, include other activities that have students doing something (reflect, practice etc.) and some things you do together. For me, I teach coding. Online classes provide plenty of opportunity for me to ask a volunteer to share their screen and we code together, with the student doing the typing. That helps me ensure that I am going student speed (instead of my own fast pace) and we cover common errors or challenges (dependencies, typos, conventions) as they appear in real time. I can also suggest that the task is for the class to support the volunteer to get through the example.

I co-teach a course on Working with Students with Learning Differences, and seeing the student engagement is one of the most satisfying aspects of the course for me. A key element of the course is the weekly discussions, and students are required not only to contribute, but also to provide substantive comments on their classmates' contributions in order to receive full credit for this part of the course. We also offer weekly "office hours" which are live virtual meetings where students can discuss topics in greater depth with us. These meetings have been one of the highlights of the course for students and instructors alike.

A common concern that I often hear regarding online courses is the feeling of disconnect between the student and the course and/or professor. Feedback and support are crucial ways for the instructor to demonstrate care for the students' education by taking the time to review their work and consider ways for them to grow and develop as students, professionals, and individuals. Feedback and support can take various forms, but they should both be ample in the classroom.

When teaching languages online, I use technology to offer personalized feedback to students. Through digital platforms, I can add comments to their written assignments that not just fix errors but also acknowledge their hard work and recommend resources suited to their particular needs. Video feedback is also part of my strategy, as I create custom messages discussing their development, emphasizing their skills, and providing helpful tips. This method makes feedback more interactive and tailored, while also giving students the chance to listen to the right pronunciation and intonation, vital for language learning.

Yep - it's essential to shift the pace, content and timing of assignments and even of what's being covered in the class. Otherwise, you lose people. I honestly don't know how instructors do it without live virtual interactive classes or sessions. It's through those interactions that we, as instructors, gauge what is working and meaningful - and what's not! Being adaptable requires tight, simple learning goals for each class that, together will build the overall learning goals of the course or program. It takes an intuitive instructor who is more interested in the students than in the content who is able to adapt the approach to meet those few learning goals for the most students.

I agree that evaluation and improvement are key factors for effective learning. For example, I dislike seeing courses with outdated material still being taught. We should keep content current, which comes from evaluating and improving courses regularly.

Agree wholeheartedly @Mark Sanders Strong. In LLEAD we are fortunate to have a 6-day intensive in which everyone comes together in person; this connects everyone and makes a huge difference in their virtual interaction. LLEAD begins virtually (before the in-person) and then continues virtually. The need to keep content current is essential, and we'll shift a class to a topic or issue that has surfaced at the in-person or in a virtual class that we hadn't planned to do - but realize we need to. We were evaluating the program 1/2 way thru (at 6 months when it was a 12-month program) & that let us make immediate improvements. We've restructured it to a 6-month program so our evaluation won't come until the end now. We'll see!

Follow a flipped learning approach that involves students in the learning content and helps them get engaged continuously. A flipped virtual classroom enables teachers to assume their own responsibility and select the learning content that is most appropriate to them.

Make it simple and try to call out names of the students in class to ensure maximum attention, participation and concentration.In most cases let the students read the projected slides/notes and give their interpretation and understanding first.Again let them name who is next to read the next slide/sentence or slide.This keeps them in suspense and creates curiosity.

For each virtual class we co-create our online learning environment. Student feedback is that they find this very useful - and it is just as useful for instructors. We can see (via camera) and hear where every student is or what they are coping with, and build that into the discussion. The question or topic we'll use to co-create is in the class prep. Ppl respond to the question or share insights on the issue, in 20-30 seconds at the beginning of class, so we can keep this to about 20 minutes. The question may be "what do you need to put on a post-it or in your ToDo list & put aside to be able to focus on the class for the next 3 hrs?" We've put people into small groups to do this; ppl prefer the large group to keep connected with all.
