I believe that leveraging volume is very important but I would never tie a specific number of cases or pounds to a negotiation. I would say we do x amount of volume in your category. You represent y percentage of that total. Show them the opportunity but never make a guarantee. The reason I feel this way is that if the market contracts or their products don’t perform you can get hit for the difference at the end of the agreed upon time. The vendor needs to be incentivized to be your partner in making this work.

My question is what is the definition of long term? Depending on the market fluctuation of costs neither I nor the vendor want to push out very far. My business was food and the costs change very quickly. If you can base the deal on a cost based cost that factors in a quantifiable market like cheese or eggs it might make sense. Just realize you will win on the ups and lose on the downs based on your on hand inventory.

Partnerships with vendors are crucial for mutual growth. I do not like to share my market intel with a vendor but if they are willing to support me and they demonstrate that I will share data to a point. I would very rarely share my end user data because if our partnership should blow up, they can go after my business at the end user level. The more they demonstrate their willingness to help my business grow, the more I am willing to share.
