There is no best algorithm. There are many factors that influence the algorithm choice. Depending of the type of data (text, number ..), size of data, desired problem outcome, language of the data, you choose the algorithm.

Choosing the best one depends on what you have (structured/unstructured data, numerical/categorical, etc.) and what you want to find (trends, relationships, predictions, etc.). Explore different algorithms based on your data type and task, considering their strengths, weaknesses, and resource needs. Even if you find yourself the best algorithm, the resources constraints affects your ability to proceed with it . So, considering different constraints and circumstances you can choose the algorithm best for your case.

In my personal experience, PCA has almost always helped noticeably improve the performance of my algorithm.

Extreme Feature Engineering: Feature engineering is the process of selecting and transforming input variables to improve the performance of machine learning models. Extreme feature engineering involves creating new features that are not directly related to the input variables.

Those higher quality features will make it easier for your algorithm to learn your problem, and thus likely improve your performance as well.

You can also take part in online courses or communities where folks exchange their knowledge, similar to joining a club for a new hobby. Learning about algorithms is an exciting and the more you deep dive into it and practice, the more confident and skilled you'll be.

The best way to learn more about algorithms, to start with solving problem in different online platform ( leetcode, codeforces, hacker ranks ..etc.). Also read different research articles in your research domain. And solve real life problem with different novel algorithms

Focus on the theoretical first if you are unsure. There are a lot of books and courses on DM which give you a good primer over the basic algorithms, a popular one is Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques by Jiawei Han and Co. Once that is done with, we have a Journal of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, where you can look out for articles on recent advancements on the same.

I find Algorithms the most beautiful part of learning about Data Science and AI. It's also often the most visible and news-creating portion of the AI value chain, so just being exposed to the latest news and research will take you 20% of the way there. Then you have to sit down with your pen and paper, try and understand the algorithms being proposed down to their mathematical first principles, and see if you can follow along - it's tough, full of challenges, but ask questions at every step, use LLMs & Generative AI to try to find answers to your questions, and don't give up! :)

If you're struggling to extract insights from your data, it's possible that there is just no relationship between the X, Y, and Z (to however many dimensions). Alternatively, there may be a relationship but the signal is drowned out by noise, and you may just need a lot more data to overcome that. If there really is adequate data and a relationship between the variables but you are still struggling to determine what it is, you may want to try performing a Principal Component Analysis or use a clustering approach to determine whether your data set really consists of two or more groups that would be better analyzed independently of one another.

Some times we use hybrid algorithms using 2 or more methods to generate optimal results for extracting data in data mining process. The hybrids algorithms optimise the results rapidly as compare implementing only one technique. These days clustering algorithms are used with other swarm intelligence algorithms to produce data optimally.

The art and science (yes it's an art in addition to being a science) of aligning the right algorithm and problem solving methodology to your problem statement is highly subjective - while there are guidelines and best practices to take care of the first 5-10%, there are a ton of insights that you will empirically learn by yourself only upon repeated experimentation and documenting your findings. So don't be disheartened if success is elusive - the detective nature of finding the right algorithms is a lot harder than it's given credit for :)

I'd like to focus on another perspective. At the end of the day an algorithm takes some input, runs some calculations and spits out some results. If I am struggling extracting insights, first I need to sit back and think what kind of insights am I looking for before jumping into algorithms, data structure, etc... For example: a classifier will classify data based on labels or categories. Even with the perfect classifier to your data, maybe the classification has no value in terms of insights. An insight is at the very least a hint about some predictability. In the example, an insight I'd be looking for is a certain distribution across the categories. With this information, we know what to look for, now we can ask algorithms to help.
