You’re drilling a well in a remote location. How can you keep your team motivated and efficient?

Drilling a well in remote location means that supply of everything is scarce and it is not an area where source is readily available. Embedding a culture of continuous communication is key to keep the team informed, up-to-date all the time, which is a key to keep morale and involvement. You need to make sure that team understands that every voice does matter. people should feel comfortable to talk about anything.

I spent most of my Oilfield Career working in remote locations, mostly offshore. Then, having a strong Team Leadership with clear objectives and integration will determine the quality and safety of the job. In a remote location you have not only the Drilling Team, but also representatives and operators from Service Companies, Catering, Client Representatives, Drilling Supervisors etc. all with their own agenda. Planning ahead from the time of developing the well concept and design will allow sufficient preparation work to be carried out, so that the location is equipped with everything required to respond to either an emergency, or a technical difficulty, in order to eliminate the stress of responding to an unforeseen situation.

Being in a remote location means you are drilling either a wildcat or exploratory well which is always special in many senses. This is what you need to transmit, that you are part of something special, something that not many people have the luck to work for, that your work is important because it could mean a new development in the future and you were at the X-1 location.

In terms of communication, the nature of drilling activity is the rig is always in remote locations; 20 km or 2000 km. The most important aspect is to build a trust relationship. In my experience, I have spent more time talking about personal aspects rather than drilling issues. Working in this way contributes to understanding each other, mainly when troubles arise. The people on rigsite needs somebody in which they will find support.

Motivation is one of the most important tools that guarantee results. one of the ways i would motivate the team is to ensure that they get whatever they for for. Secondly, i would give awards for outstanding perfomance. Also, i will create an atmosphere that ill make every member of the team have a sense of belonging and responsibility. I will also organize trainings that will boost their confidence.

You have to communicate and know what they’re up against and be willing to pay for their obstacles that worry them of payment and reputation!

Importante usar a linguagem comum da perfuração, fazendo cursos e lendo manual das sondas e fazendo os cursos de well control e todo os cursos sobre cimentaçao, fluidos, lwd, mwd, brocas, colunas de perfuração, motor de fundo e todo os outros equipamentos de plataformas offshore e onshore, que permitem e ajudao na construção de poços e também na segurança dos mesmos como os BOPs e fluidos de perfuração que garantem a segurança durante a execução e Permitem uma comunicação rápida e excelente entre o time, pois usam a mesma linguagem e os mesmos objetivos.

I worked for 25 years in remote locations, from Sahara to Siberia. Being based on a remote location has its challenges but also opportunities, both very significant and unique. About the challenges: the main one is that you lose personal control of your private life and any adverse event at home, no matter how small, becomes monumental: wife's car had a flat tire, kitchen tap is dripping, "you are not here when I need you" etc. are matters that will create disproportionate worry and anxiety. Try to distance yourself and see things in perspective, look at the positives that may come out, such as "finally someone misses me" or: "when I am going home I will buy that fancy tap that my wife likes".

Treinamento em todos os equipamentos e segurança do poço , e well control são fundamentais para a boa execução e comunicação e manter o ambiente saudável entre os trabalhadores de uma sonda nas diversas fases, pois desde a fase Transporte e alocação da sonda a equipe tem que estar sincronizada e cada um executando suas funções de maneira precisa e coordenada. E o treinamento e manutenção do conhecimento do time amplia muito sucesso da execução e construção de poços seguros e muito produtivos durante a vida dos poços e dos equipamentos.

Training is so important when working in oil and gas. There are alway new technologies and better methods to get the job done easier, faster, and in better quality. It's also crucial to give the necessary safety training on regular basis whenever their licenses expire in order to guarantee a safe work environment especially in such risky job.

regular training does not work very well. So, a sort of training consisted of field jobs, lab experiments and technical workshops are needed to train the your engineers very well. They must be trained while experiencing field happenings.

Speaking about personal worries, it is very important not to trivialize other people's problems, no matter how small or insignificant, for them they can be of galactic proportions. Take them seriously, try to understand the situation and, even if you don't, be positive and add positive statements or examples of things ending well, be open and honest. Ask them for advice in your own matters or worries, this is the best way to distract them from their own.

Segurança fundamental durante toda as fases, Transporte dia equipamentos, montagem e operação, também bem-estar dos times de execução pois o profissionais se sente seguros trabalhando com todos sabendo que executar de maneira segura cada função. A fase de perfuração sempre pode ter surpresas se não tiver sido planejada e se cada hum não souber trabalhar e conhecer como trabalhar com segurança cada fase e conhecer e controlar o poço , necessitando também de muito conhecimento de MPD para poder em poços desafiadores diminuir o número de fases e manter a segurança.

The motivation is the most important skill that we to improve, everyday in the morning meeting and crew change shif, need to speak about it, keeping our goal and procedures update to minimize any accident or incident in the job, also, speak about our physical and mentality in the job, same way, is important key make some activity phisical to drain stress. The motivation is equal to discipline in the job.

"Safety comes first". Always teach it to the fresh guys that safety is the first. beside the safety, it is also needed to take care of their mental health as drilling work is a tough phenomenon.

Por algunos años trabaje en locaciones remotas con muchas dificultades y carencias, en función de ello, puedo mencionar que estos aspectos elementales como un descanso y alimentación adecuada son muy importantes, lo cual se completa con instalaciones recreativas acordes a la cantidad de personas en sitio, con facilidades de comunicación y reposo son un plus que le facilitan la estancia de esas largas jornadas. La camaradería y esa sensación de nueva familia en ese sitio forja nuevas y duraderas relaciones que pasan del plano laboral.

Na Patagônia Argentina, perfurando poços em terras remotas, aprendi a verdadeira essência da conexão. Longe do convencional, mergulhei nas comunidades locais, escolhendo quentinhas caseiras, absorvendo o calor das praças vilarejas. Ouvindo relatos sobre o impacto do petróleo em suas vidas, percebi que construir relacionamentos transcende a simples interação. É sobre ouvir, genuinamente conhecer. Esse aprendizado moldou minha liderança, ensinando que, mesmo à distância, podemos criar laços fortes, fundamentados no respeito mútuo e na compreensão profunda. Aprendi a tomar mate como forma de interagir com meus colegas na cultura deles, gerando conexão verdadeira. A confiança nasce a partir daí, de uma forma muito natural.

Hay que considerar que, psicológicamente estar en áreas remotas, el desempeño de los trabajadores es diferente respecto a aquellos que trabajan en áreas urbanas y horarios administrativos . Por tal razón en áreas remotas a los trabajadores hay que mantenerlos motivados y generar un sentido de convicción en que el éxito del proyecto no es el triunfo de uno o dos equipos, sino el de todos y cada uno de los involucrados en el mismo

When you are in a remote location far from home,tired and you job is to drill a well with all its challenges if you don't build rapport and teamwork you will lose energy and motivation among your team and frustration can kill the team motivation resulting passivation and prone to personal failure.

Working in a remote location is an opportunity to develop yourself either in your profession or in area of personal interest: for example, while I was working in Omani desert (5 years!) I decided to study religions: it was fascinating! I read the Koran in English, my Arabic is salutations only, but I had people very happy to explain and guide me, I re-read the Bible, Budhist and Hindu (I strongly reccommend Swammi Vivenkananda), also a variety of studies about world religions. I also developed ways to incentivize the drilling performance among the crews, setting targets for various operations, it is amazing how responsive an knowledgeable the crew members are and how many good ideas may arise.

It is a repetitive fact that teamwork is important. we all know that teamwork is important. what is special between drilling field guys is " good relations". You can not behave in the field like what you do in the office. relationship and staying friendly speaks first in the field!

Being in a remote location is challenging enough. The need for a good internet connection so the team can keep in touch / see their family and friends is crucial!

First, ensure that all the team meets the safety requirements. Have something in common and communicate personally, listen and they will love to share their experience. Help them with the appropriate training and development needed. Qualify them to solve problems and innovate within their SOR. And have mutual trust.

People are a wealth of knowledge and experience, get to know them, they will love to share their experiences. On one rig I met a derrickman who was a... historian, we spend so many nights on the mud tanks asking him questions about Roman Empire and the UK-French wars, I had a mud engineer on a rig, a girl, she was a math prodigy, she could do all these complicated math calculations without thinking, she could also tell you by heart how many joints of casing, pipe and everything else, by size you have on location at any one time. another guy was am archeologist in his other life, with adventures in South American jungle, another had 3 wives and 14 children always telling stories about them, his home and his garden near Nizwa.

Providing good internet connection will help , plus sharing the operation programs clearly with the team will help the team to be motivated.
