You're in charge of safety at a facility. How can you make sure everyone stays safe?

Regular training: Ensure everyone understands safety protocols. Clear signage: Post clear and visible safety signs throughout. Hazard identification: Proactively identify and address hazards. PPE enforcement: Require and ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Incident reporting: Encourage reporting of near misses and incidents for investigation and prevention. Remember, safety is a shared responsibility. By working together, you can create a safe work environment.

Conducting Safety training, Making sure ppe's are made use of, emergency response plans should be put in place, safety cinages should be place in strategic places in the facility, Making sure you know the kind of hazzard that might be encountered in the facility...

All of the mentioned steps are required to ensure safety and / or compliance at a facility. Through my experience the institution of a behavioral based safety observation program and pro- active programs such as Stop Work Responsibility and Near Miss reporting go a long way in reducing incidents throughout a facility. You must ensure management support and buy-in so they must present these programs and processes to their teams.

Our top priority should be ensuring the safety of everyone who occupies our facilities. To guarantee the safety of your staff within your facility, you can take the following measures: - Make sure everyone wears protective equipment - Provide proper Health and Safety training covering unsafe acts and conditions - Implement Safe Work Procedures - Encourage everyone to always report any unsafe conditions....etc

Here are some key strategies I would prioritize: - Developing a Comprehensive Safety Plan: by developing a detailed safety plan that identifies potential hazards, outlines safety protocols, and establishes emergency procedures. - Employee Training and Education to educate employees about safety protocols, proper equipment usage, emergency procedures, and hazard recognition. - Regular Safety Inspections and Audit to promptly address any issues or deficiencies identified at the very first time. - Creating a culture of safety to encourage employee involvement in safety initiatives,recognize and reward safe behaviors. - Ensuring that employees have access to the necessary safety equipment and resources. - Continous monitoring and improvement.

When using the hierarchy of controls it is important to show that through direct and indirect costs of incidents and injuries, all monies spent to achieve hazard control will have a return on investment (ROÍ). It is important to ensure everyone in the organization knows that safety is always, but without profit margin and ROÍ, companies will go out of business, regardless of how safe they are.

There are leading and lagging indicators. Leading indicators are things such as inspection reports, near miss reporting, BBS observation data, and employee feedback through surveys or suggestions. All of which can help develop metrics to know and understand the direction your safety program is headed. Lagging indicators only show where you have been. While insurance carriers and customers tend to grade their contractors on the lagging side of the scale, you will improve safety at your facility focusing on the leading indicators.

When engaging the stakeholders in your organization first split them between Internal and External. For internal stakeholders you may consider a different form of communication to increase awareness such as bulletin postings , or a team huddle. External stake holders may require a different channel of communication depending on their specialties. For tradesmen and contractors, perhaps a poster or brochure explaining the top 3-5 key hazards to look for on site would be useful. For office administrators or financial analysts perhaps and email or a graph would be ideal to explain important metrics for Safety. Map the communication and use a tone that is appropriate for your relationship with the audience and/or type of request.

When frontline staff members see that the higher ups within the organization are "practicing what they preach" they respect it. A good leader is on the floor every so often to ask questions and gather information from the front line in order to get a grasp of the major hazards workers face on a daily basis. Here is where leaders can contribute by recognizing safe behaviours and correcting behaviours that could lead to an incident. Frontline staff don't like to be micro managed - but this would not be the case here. Identify one part of the job they are doing fantastic, and advice on how they can make the task even safer (if necessary). Behaviour based safety observations are a highly effective method to bolster the overall safety culture.

From experience , having consequences and penalties help to deter workers from “normalising” the risk and committing unsafe acts during the course of work.

An efficient IMS for the facility will improve the ability to identify and address any gaps on time and take the necessary control measures.
