Your team members have conflicting communication styles in a remote setting. How will you bridge the gap?

To bridge communication style gaps in a remote team: Understand each person's preferred way of communicating. Agree on common guidelines or tools for communication. Have regular check-ins to clarify expectations and resolve misunderstandings. Be flexible and adapt communication methods as needed. Provide training on effective remote communication. Encourage open feedback to improve communication over time.

First thing. It is not all about you. A clear communication among the team styles, types of communication, what is expected, what time zone are you expected to be online. We are in an era that respecting individuals and reaching to a point that is not perfect to me, but works for both is what we seek for.

Bridging the gap through intervening is at best a temporary measure. What you should be doing is looking to a long term solution. And then broker or facilitate the discussion so everyone works on themselves to improve the long term. Then you, the leader can concentrate on better, growth focused opportunities. Make sure your coaching skills are up to the scrutiny!

Remote setting lends itself to try new ways for communication. That’s why having as many channels for that is imperative in order to understand the people we work with. Have a slack channel for quick messages, emails for more formal messages, and Zoom for those team building meetings. If you are a remote worker and you don’t like or can’t communicate through neither of these channels then you shouldn’t work remotely.

I strongly believe that each team member has to be empowered to set communication rules with the team. The team has to believe in an overarching rule that there cannot be a break down in their "working relation" due to their differing communication styles. In my experience each individual has an innate sense of bridging communication gaps if they have a high sense of responsibility towards their deliverables. Regular team review meets, call/email along with conflicting team members to place the responsibility on both for the smooth deliverables are essential at first. After a few instances of these clarifying calls/emails, such concerns will cease. Drive "Team Trust", then "Communication Styles" become secondary.

There isn’t a one size for all, that’s correct. But in remote work you are bound to the technologies that make communication easier. So, if working remotely is what an employee wants they have to make it their priority to embrace the different communication channels. An employee can’t say, “I hate Zoom meetings”. Zoom meeting are essential because is the only way we can see each other, what else do you expect? We can’t simply chat all day via slack. That’s the point, the norm should be to embrace the various channels that exist.

Bridging communication gaps among team members in a remote setting can be achieved by leveraging technology. Utilizing project management tools, apps that encourage collaboration and task managers are all valuable resources in this regard. However, it is important to ensure that these tools are user-friendly, easily adoptable and appeal to the preferences of majority of team members.

This should be a no brainier. People today are more willing to voice their opinions and concerns behind the screen than in person, crazy I know. So invite team members to share. Even the shier ones can be a tremendous resource as they can give their take on issues. That build their self esteem.

Fostering inclusion in communication is so important. Often we have internalized issues and biases as well as our organizations. We may not realize that we are communicating in ways that are being exclusive to others. The more time you spend trying to understand why others might communicate differently, the better off you will be in terms of inclusion.

There is no shadow of doubt that without valuing feedback constructively there can be no development of the team and personally. Focus on fostering communication and improving as a team and person!

Ofrece formación en habilidades de comunicación para mejorar la comprensión mutua. Aborda los conflictos de inmediato y de manera constructiva, buscando soluciones beneficiosas para todos.
