Start by identifying and acknowledging the unique strengths of your team member. Genuine recognition goes a long way in building confidence. Take time to observe their work and provide specific, positive feedback on what they do well. This not only affirms their abilities but also shows that you value their contributions. Encourage them to leverage these strengths in their daily tasks and when taking on new challenges. By focusing on what they excel at, they can gain the confidence to improve in other areas.

The basis of everything is building a connection, and it actually starts from the job interview. How do you meet your teammates and how do you build a connection and an experience of belonging. After that, the core of transformational leadership and coaching leadership is to find the team member's strengths and to bring them out even more strongly. This requires self-awareness from the leader that you have the ability to recognize strengths. And the different personality theories here also give clues as to how you find your teammate's strengths and not to mention their potential.
Clarity in expectations and goals is crucial for someone struggling with confidence. Help your team member by setting achievable, clear objectives that align with their strengths and areas for growth. This provides them with a roadmap to success and a sense of purpose. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks to prevent overwhelm and enable them to celebrate small victories along the way. This gradual progression can boost their confidence as they see tangible evidence of their capabilities.

"Build Confidence with Clear Goals: Set, Achieve and Celebrate Your Achievements!" I believe that setting clear goals is essential to increasing confidence. In everyday life, break big goals into smaller, achievable steps. Avoid overloading your team. How about starting a "weekly action plan" to track progress? This way, you will be the Flash of goal setting, guiding your team with clarity and motivating with small victories along the way!

When creating development goals, like a career plan, you can identify the skills you need. For example, a team member wanted to learn more facilitation methods. We arranged training and provided service design opportunities for that person to apply these methods. While it's not always this straightforward, determination finds a way. Balancing development targets with strengthening existing strengths is crucial. Focusing solely on challenges can decrease motivation and commitment. Feeling a sense of belonging to the group is essential for maintaining engagement. But still, clear communication and openness is the key.

Offer consistent support and guidance. Be available to answer questions, provide resources, or assist with problem-solving. This doesn't mean doing the work for them, but rather being a supportive presence that encourages autonomy. Let them know it's okay to make mistakes and that failure is often part of the learning process. Your support can create a safe environment for them to take risks and experiment, which is essential for growth and building confidence.

Encouragement is a crucial yet often overlooked task of a leader, especially when "being busy". However, it's the simplest way to unite people. Think about the last time you received positive feedback. Where were you, and what were you doing? How long did that good feeling last? Did it make it easier for you to give positive feedback afterward? This creates a positive cycle that strengthens cohesion. Feedback can be small but must be genuine. Dishonest feedback breaks trust immediately, while genuine feedback strengthens connections and enhances everything else.
Encourage continuous learning and development. When team members feel they are growing and improving, their confidence naturally increases. Suggest relevant training programs or workshops that can help them enhance their skills. Also, promote a culture of learning within the team where knowledge sharing is encouraged. This not only helps the individual but also strengthens the team as a whole.

Not only to increase opportunities to learn, but try to build a learning structure within the team where peers can teach each others about different topics that interest them. We made a list where each team member went and wrote down all their skills, after this the other team members stated which topics they wanted to learn more, i.e. the ones others in the team already knew. We made this learning corner, a 30-minute remote meeting where team members could learn about a different theme, such as using Excel, giving presentations, developing communication, psychological safety, etc. the sky is only the limit. And what this does is strengthen the collective cohesion in the team. And it strengthens the sharing of expertise and cohesion.
Empower your team member by fostering autonomy. Give them ownership of projects that play to their strengths and allow them to make decisions within their scope of work. Autonomy reinforces trust and confidence, as it signals that you believe in their ability to handle responsibility. Ensure that they have the necessary tools and authority to make decisions, which will help them feel more invested and confident in their role.

Task clarity is crucial. Clearly communicate the task, goals, and methods to your team members. Explain what to do if the original plan doesn't work, ensuring they know it's okay to ask for help. This prevents unpleasant surprises when the task is due. Provide clear instructions and contingency plans without undermining the team member. Then, step back and allow them the freedom to execute the task. You'll notice their confidence grows when they can follow a clear plan. This approach gives you more time for other leadership duties. Consider using Agile methods like SCRUM for better clarity and planning.
Finally, encourage reflection on progress made. Regularly review achievements and areas of improvement with your team member. This reflection can help them understand their growth trajectory and recognize the strides they've made in building their confidence. Celebrate successes together and discuss strategies for addressing challenges. This ongoing dialogue keeps confidence-building at the forefront of their professional development.
