Reset goals during the project are necessary if circumstances are adverse. Reset goals from existing goals should be practical to utilise already expenses incurred.

There are a few maxims in R&D. Once you fall behind schedule managements decision making ability becomes worse pushing the project further behind schedule while trying to get back onto schedule pushing management to make worse decisions etc etc etc. Once you fall behind schedule in R&D the more people you bring on to get back on schedule pushes you farther behind schedule. Once you fall behind schedule in R&D kludgy designs which are meant to keep the project moving along with the intention of improving at a later date become final designs. Once you fall behind schedule in R&D manpower turnover rate will increase at an exponential rate further pushing the project behind schedule.

The end goal may not need to change. Breaking the goal down into smaller chunks helps enormously. Team momentum and confidence can be built and accelerated when smaller milestones are met and celebrated. Smaller milestones also aid stakeholder management.

Since there are several facets to R&D reverses which may under no one’s control. You have to accept ‘good’ is ‘good enough’ as the outcome.

The important thing I had found very helpful is acknowledge the situations., be calm and take a deep breath.. Give your team a full day break for resting and recharged., in RnD its is quite common to find something unpredictable. The more important is, what we learned, and may be revisit the step and process where causing some error and find alternative resolutions..

As a soil scientist, I'd encourage adding "microbial diversity" to the R&D "soil." Each microbe (team member) brings unique capabilities, so create a safe space for their ideas to "germinate." Let them experiment with different "compost recipes" (approaches). The resulting "humus" (innovation) will enrich the R&D soil and nourish future growth.

It is important to have right direction in R&D especially when we are doing Industrial research. Targets & timelines are very important and solution provided shall be implementation oriented and techno economically feasible. I'll never forget how I got out of a recent project since there was no challenge for me anymore. its 2024 and each year we are facing progress in tech world twice the speed of the last, so if there's no learning for the Expert, soon there would be no earning for the Stakeholder. keep in mind, talented individuals wont stay in an static environment unless their knowledge thirst is fed and those who stay in the team within the static and no growth environment, well they are employees only not from R & D section.

Thomas Edison once said: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work" and this is true for many real research projects, for which a solution is not known at the time of inception. In order to discover a solution for such projects, it is important for the leadership to establish a safe, nurturing environment that encourages people to explore various novel ideas, and offer support when the staff member (or members) are faced with failure. Obviously, this is a general statement, and cases will need to be handled on an individual basis, based on their merits, etc.

Many a times in RnD we set business goals rather than knowledge goals and hence the probability of setbacks ..If knowledge creation is key then these set backs can become assets when right time comes.. When Covid came we had such a strong knowledge base that we were able to enter a category create a band and become no 1 .Also It is not necessary that the best products do well in market . May of the best R&D projects don’t even see the light of day

When faced with a crisis, I always ask myself what the next best thing is. I like to keep moving and adjust course from there. I love the bicycle analogy. It is very hard to balance a bike when not moving, but once in motion it becomes much easier.

I don't believe there is a "cookie cutter" solution. When a team that typically over delivers falls behind their morale should be boosted, and team activities should be done to brainstorm the causes for delay and to figure out as a team what should be done differently. However, when a team consistently falls behind most likely the problem is mismatch between the team's capability and the targets.
