What are some ways to highlight marginalized communities in social justice reporting?

In his latest book “How to Know a Person” David Brooks argues that none of us have access to the objective reality. It exists independently of us. We only have access to our subjective reality, which is shaped by our unique experiences, the local community we grew up in, our gender, socio-economic status, values, inherited family patterns of thinking, etc. It is our duty as journalists, therefore, to reflect diverse viewpoints when reporting on any story. The more diverse perspectives we capture, the more accurate the story jigsaw will be.

For me, lived experience is a form of expertise. To know it in your body and actually live through something creates a depth of understanding that no armchair expert can ever replicate. Value sources with lived experience.

Ensure that your newsroom reflects diversity. Having journalists from marginalized communities can bring unique perspectives and insights. Encourage diverse voices to contribute as guest writers, experts, or commentators.

In my experience with marginalized communities, I learned the value of listening and spending time observing before conducting interviews. It is a way to avoid preconceptions and open the mind and heart to empathy. The conversations that result from this technique are nutritious for both parties and more authentic testimonies are usually obtained.

Use inclusive language that respects the identity and experiences of marginalized groups. Be mindful of framing stories to avoid perpetuating stereotypes or reinforcing biases.

Depending on the country, it is convenient to define what we call "inclusive language" since being respectful is not the same as modifying the use of language.

Establish connections with local community leaders, activists, and organizations. Attend community events and meetings to understand concerns firsthand.

I highlight the importance of defining the term "community media" since many times they are created for the community but financed by competing interests. - As a journalist I consider it very important to identify the difference - The best local media I have known are generally low-budget, artisanal, and made by the community itself.

Amplifying positive narratives about marginalized communities can be effectively demonstrated through reporting focusing on resilience and creativity. Media that showcases innovation in areas such as technology emphasizes the strength of marginalized groups. Articles on creativity and art can provide insight into culture and diversity. Most importantly, this type of reporting challenges stereotypes and portrays contributions and achievements rather than negativity.

Positive discrimination measures help a lot. Hiring people from marginalized communities is a way of simplifying their integration. Staying open and validating their views may be uncomfortable but it's necessary and basic in any intervention if we want to stop marginalization
