Another mistake is not valuing diversity. Each team member brings unique skills and perspectives, and these should be appreciated. Ignoring conflicts is also a mistake. Conflicts should be addressed promptly and constructively. Lastly, not providing feedback can hinder growth. In communication, I’ve found it’s important to use factual data and remove opinion when possible. Personal opinion should drive the quest to research a particular view point and approach a disagreement from a quantitative view as opposed to a personal view.

Strive for connection, not communication. Communication and connection are not the same thing. Communication is the exchanging of information. It's processed in the frontal lobe of the brain. Connection is the feeling of understanding & the ease of communication b/w people. It's processed in the insular cortex of the brain. Technology enables communication, not connection. Texting a colleague is communication. Having a colleague feel the sentiment of your message via the tone in your voice & seeing your facial expression is connection. Communication is dealt. Connection is felt. Trade communication for connection. Trade a... -text message for a phone call. -virtual meeting for an in-person meeting. -statement for a question.

Trust is one of the most difficult aspects to build in a team and the easiest to lose. A common mistake is thinking that when trust is built through time spent together, you are done, and the trust is there to stay. However, trust is a continuous process that you need to keep 'watering,' just like you need to keep watering plants. Small actions will contribute to it, such as showing that you are a reliable person, that you have knowledge, that you are an asset to the team, and that you are open in your communication, etc. But one lie that jeopardizes the team can make you lose all the trust of the team. So be conscious of your actions and their impact.

La diversité existe toujours au sein d'une équipe ! Mais très souvent cette diversité reste invisible, essentiellement pour 2 raisons : 1. La volonté d'appartenance à un groupe a tendance à standardiser les comportements et favoriser inconsciemment les biais de conformité et donc d'auto-censure. 2. Faire face à la diversité demande des efforts d'adaptabilité que tout le monde n'est pas près à faire. Pour beaucoup d'équipes, il est plus confortable d'affirmer que tout le monde est "aligné". Pour aller au-delà de cette inhibition, il faut démontrer la richesse de la diversité (ex: groupe de travail transverse) tout en favorisant l'expression des différences (ex: rituels d'inclusion).

MOST people really don't understand the benefits or reasons for diversity. Non-intellectual thinking always makes it all about skin color, gender, or other physical characteristics. Being diverse in these ways does not guarantee diversity. For companies that serve or sell to customers, the most valuable diversity is diversity of thought and ideas. Diversity of thought and ideas is what generates real creativity. It's what helps companies understand the wide range of customers that they (hope to) have. If you have a 4-person team with 4 different skin colors, it's not necessarily a diverse team; not if they all agree on everything. If a team can constructively, civilly disagree and still work together, then that is true diversity.

I love admitting my mistakes. You would never believe how liberating it feels, and when you do it, you'd never believe how supportive your team can be. It takes the monkey off everyone's back, and let's a team move forward. When you do this, it also deepens the respect people have for you, not the opposite that most people fear.

A good balance between the "it" and the "us" is key to enhance team performance. "Us" is about sharing moments, like eating together from time to time if possible, getting to know each other outside of the job. As a team leader you should plan for some fun moments and activities. Set the tone and the level of informality you desire, be empathic and understand that anyone could be more or less engaged in the activity for personal reasons. On this last point you should consider that even very small things can be effective, like plan for fun moments (games, challenges, conversational topics) during team meetings to divert the focus from the work discussion for a while.

Get your team out of the building and do things together - often. 1. For work meetings, I like to get my team out of the building. The change in environment naturally causes changes in thinking and creativity. In a rut? Go somewhere different together. Coffeeshop, park, anywhere. 2. Create team building events outside of work. Go bowling, or to a baseball game. Go to a park and play kickball or volleyball outside. Have dinner with spouses at a nice restaurant. Prohibit work discussions. "Breaking bread" together improves familiarity and strengthens bonds.

Emotional IQ One of the biggest mistakes leaders make within a team, is being so consumed in task that they loose a pulse on the people. It's easy to get caught up in making the machine run but we cannot forget that people are the world's currency. Taking time to hear their voice and acting on what you hear to improve the environment. The key is to do this while still: 🤌🏾 maintaining standards, 🤌🏾 setting expectations, 🤌🏾 setting healthy boundaries 🤌🏾 and showing up as you say you are. When we don't do these things it throws off the balance of the team. To reposition and regain this balance you have to be keen enough to know when it's off. So leaders must heighten their emotional IQ to have a pulse on the people.

Connection is now the most valuable team currency. If a remote team feels disconnected and isolated, they are... 7x more likely to disengage. 5x more likely to miss work. 3x more likely to underperform. 3x more likely to quit. If leaders want to create resilient, loyal, and high-performing remote teams...they have to feel a sense of connection and belonging. A simple way to begin to cultivate more belonging is to have 1 team member share 1 non-work-related picture for 5 minutes at the beginning of virtual team meetings. Connection takes less effort and time than most think. But it does require intentional effort. Be connectable. You and your remote team members will be better for it.

If there is someone getting preferential treatment then this will be noticed. This will result in damaged trust, falling engagement, and poorer outcomes for the team.

O que considero um erro grave ao liderar uma equipe é tratar todos da mesma forma. Pessoas são diferentes e consequentemente os resultados serão diferentes. É preciso um olhar crítico para apoiar aquele que não está gerando resultados e se sente desconfortável, assim como potencializar e reconhecer aquele que está "voando". Empatia, saber ouvir, olhar crítico e apoio são características fundamentais em um líder.
