Ironically, the AI answer isn't terribly helpful in this context. From my experience, the two main types of AI that are currently relevant to decision making are analytical and generative. On the analytical side, AI can process vast quantities of computationally intensive, multidimentional data far faster and more comprehensively than any human. This means that it can identify trends, make accurate forecasts and generally highlight probabilistic and deterministic patterns that are otherwise beyond our reach--but we still need to understand the outputs. That's where generative AI (in particular large language models, like ChatGPT) are critical: they can present the resultant outputs in human-readable language that assists decision-making.

AI can provide many advantages for decision-making, such as speed and efficiency in processing data faster and more accurately than humans. AI can also generate creative ideas, solutions, and strategies by combining and analyzing data from various sources. Additionally, AI can optimize and customize decisions based on the preferences, goals, and contexts of the decision-makers. Finally, AI can facilitate collaboration and learning between human decision-makers by providing feedback, suggestions, and explanations.

Undeniably, speed and scale are huge benefits of AI, processing vast quantities of data in the blink of an eye and generating human-like explanations all day long without ever tiring. However it is important to view such benefits in context--as decision support tools. They do the hard work that is beyond the scope of human processing and they function best when used in combination with human intelligence. In essence, their key value is in removing the need for humans to perform repetitive, routine tasks--the sort of tasks we are famously bad at without generating errors. By removing this step, it frees us up to use our higher intelligence, undertaking engaging tasks informed by dedicated, AI-enhanced tools.
