What are the most effective ways to integrate sustainability into your social impact career?

I feel like staying informed has always been my advocate for sustainability. Educate Yourself: Stay informed about current sustainability issues, best practices, and emerging trends. Continuously educate myself on environmental and social challenges to make informed decisions in your career.

1) Define what sustainability means to you and the areas that you want to have the greatest impact. 2) Set realistic and meaningful short and long term goals. 3) Identify of key indicators that you want to hold yourself and others (family, employer, vendors, stakeholders) accountable to. 4) Developing a detailed plan for implementing sustainability improvements in your life. Add timelines to hold yourself and others accountable. 5) Measure your impact against your indicators. 6) Gather feedback from stakeholders and others to see how your definition, indicators, or activities can adapt based on circumstances. 7) Be transparent with your goals when you set them and what you accomplished at the end of the time period.

Keep cultivating new knowledge to remain afloat/relevant on key trends on key elements and principles of sustainability, and be a change agent by having measurable metrics (Key Performance Indicators) that can guide and show progress along this journey. Additionally, there is a dire need to engage key stakeholders especially the beneficiaries to own up to programs hence their longevity. Notwithstanding, an eco-friendly mitigation strategy whereby the environment is the heartbeat of any programming.

I feel that integrating sustainability into a social impact career, effectively involves several key strategies. 1. This could involve taking courses, attending seminars, and keeping up with relevant literature. 2. Incorporate Sustainability into Core Values, Make sustainability a fundamental aspect of your professional ethos. Advocate for and implement sustainable practices within your organization.

Tools like the B Impact Assessment, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Triple Bottom Line (TBL) can be instrumental in evaluating social, environmental, and economic performance. Seeking feedback from various stakeholders, including clients, beneficiaries, partners, donors, and employees, provides valuable insights into their needs and expectations. This feedback, combined with the assessment, allows you to set realistic and impactful sustainability goals, ensuring your career actions align with broader environmental and social objectives. This approach not only improves your work's sustainability but also enhances its overall impact and relevance.

Como Trabalhador e Sociólogo, desde 2015 venho imergindo nas discussões sobre a “questão ambiental contemporânea”. Me espanta a desconexão dos atores sociais que lideram e gerenciam esse processo de “transição ambiental” com relação ao entendimento sobre realidade dos trabalhadores brasileiros. Os algoritmos de IA e os critérios de seleção robotizados parecem não aprender a importância de se humanizar esse processo. Formar esse trabalhador. Ter paciência, cuidado e dar a devida segurança para que esse trabalhador possa ser o baluarte dessa mudança de racionalidade econômica nos territórios, em suas localidades.

Collaborating with teachers to incorporate environmental topics into the curriculum, establishing partnerships with eco-friendly organizations for student support, and advocating for policies that prioritize eco-friendly practices within the school system are additional impactful steps. By intertwining sustainability with social work, professionals contribute to a holistic approach to student well-being and community resilience.

Continuous learning is necessary tool for growth in any sector. Sustainability is ever growing in demand domain which can't be neglected. We must find methods to become more sustainable and keep continuing to adapt changes. Key factors for educating ourselves and others are - 1) Constantly doing R&D work and reading various types of reports and research paper published for it. 2) Creating a community of like minded people all around the world on a common platform where everyone can share ideas and a healthy & learning discussion can take place. 3) Spreading awareness & doing drives to encourage people to become sustainable and find methods, terminologies, techniques on how we can adapt change easily and spread it worldwide.

Organize or join online webinars to educate yourself and others on sustainability, providing a platform to share industry innovations. Establish mentorship relationships with experienced sustainability professionals for guidance. Additionally, host seminars to guide individuals transitioning into sustainability careers, sharing your experiences to clarify career paths and opportunities in the field.

An example that I've seen with this is to be transparent when educating and learning from students and colleagues. Many leaders view transparency as vulnerability and I think vulnerability gives many leaders further credibility. It can also allow for others to join in on your social impact career, mission, purpose and goals. It allows for genuine relationships and growth in companies.

Before we can educate others, it's important first to educate ourselves. I found that we often start by studying thought leaders who see the world from our dominant Western capitalist perspective. Learning from indigenous elders opens us up to a different worldview that helps us promote transformation on a systemic level rather than just one organization at a time. Teaching, leadership, and practice are the pillars of the social work profession. Teaching future social workers in the context of social justice, antiracist, and anti-oppressive practices is essential for moving the profession forward. Whether in academia, as a clinical supervisor, or as a mentor, I have found teaching to be one of the most personally satisfying aspects of my social work career.

It's crucial to be a sponge, soaking up information about sustainability. Seek out the wisdom of experts, tap into the experiences of your peers, and let mentors guide you. In this age of information, online resources are a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Keep an open mind and never stop learning.

In my opinion it ALL starts with Education. Educating oneself and others by answering the questions of: who, what, when, where, how, and sometimes why, will start a domino effect of awareness, accountability, and also actions (amongst others), that are needed to foster the culture of sustainability in organizations worldwide.

Many parts of social work can be isolating- even in a field that is so social in so many ways. Therapists can spend all day with clients and still feel ‘alone.’ This means a greater emphasis needs to be had on connection and collaboration so that you don’t get stuck. The best way to increase awareness and progress on sustainability and any other topic is to discuss and interact with many people who are alike and different than you.

This needs to be front and centre of annual reporting. Sustainable practices are gaining traction among investors, who are increasingly incorporating ESG (environmental, social, and governance) factors into their investment decisions. A comprehensive sustainability report can attract and retain environmentally conscious investors.

Were you invited? What's your motivation? Be flexible, agile, and ensure you're the SME. Be aware of cross-sectional/interdependent impact factors and professionals/disciplines. One area I have found helpful is to make sure that social workers attend professional development courses and conferences to stay on top of what is going on in the field. Your place of employment can be limited, social platforms can be limited so taking intentional steps to understand what is going on in the field will truly sustain you and your career. Get out there. Learn and Explore. Repeat.

Understand industry trends so you can remain relevant with the content you are delivering. Remaining fresh to current trends and ideas will create a sustainable social impact career. Find your niche and become an expert. This will set you above as you understand how you can provide a service or benefit to others. Advocate! Use your voice for the greatest good.
