What are the most effective ways to help clients navigate a rapidly changing technology landscape?

Assessing/understanding your client’s capabilities, limitations and gaps is foundational for a successful customer business outcome.

As a technology consultant, it’s crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and their applications. Additionally, it’s important to listen carefully to your clients and understand their needs. Once you have a clear understanding of their needs and are aware of the available options, you’ll be better equipped to help them navigate the “Technology Landscape.” This concept is similar to the instructions given by flight attendants to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others with theirs. A successful consultant builds a strong working relationship with their clients and becomes their trusted advisor. When there is knowledge, understanding, and trust, navigating the technology landscape becomes much easier!

I have found helpful to dig deeper into clients market environment and seek small indications of disruptive incomers. They usually are much faster in applying and deploying disruptive capabilities that are enabled by new technologies. On the other hand, established enterprises have plateaued their models and have inborn opposition to change, which will prevent the adaptation of new ways or means. Therefore, consultant should assess both evolution of the market, development of enabling technologies, signs of early adaptations and reflect those against current capabilities, organizational culture, and potential risk appetite before promoting options for distributive business.

Take amazon.com as an example. Their website looked dull and outdated by years, it lacked many fancy features. But still, Amazon was extremely successful, outgrowing any other retailer on the planet. Why? Because they concentrated on customers, and not on technology. They figured out customers are delighted with fast shipping, low prices, huge selection and a convenient interface. These 4 principles are NOT rapidly changing, in fact they will stay forever. It is also predictable how to delight customers in the future, if prices are even lower and shipments times are even shorter.

One of the key challenges that I've seen with clients, is to frame the problem in a way that both internal senior stakeholders understand as well aligning with business needs and strategies. Finding use cases that can solve specific problems in short period time help to gain confidence and find buy in to deliver value. With the advent of Generative AI, and the significant business value that could be gained, it's time to map the problems that could be solved.

Keeping up-to-date in tech is crucial, but equally important is sharp, transparent Agile communication. It's all about keeping things open and moving quickly. Regular, clear updates and open lines of dialogue help everyone stay on the same page. This way, clients can see the progress in real-time and can quickly pivot if something new pops up. It's like having a GPS for the project – always showing the current location, the route taken, and any roadblocks ahead. By communicating this way, we ensure clients are always in the loop, making it easier for them to make those big decisions.

Keeping abreast of the latest developments, innovations, and best practices in your field enables you to offer clients advice that is not only current but also forward-thinking. Understanding how these technological changes impact your clients' specific industries, markets, and competitors is crucial for providing relevant and strategic guidance. Awareness of the risks and opportunities associated with new technologies is equally important. This includes understanding the implications of both adopting and ignoring these advancements. By being well-informed, you can help clients weigh the pros and cons, enabling them to make decisions that align with their business goals and risk appetites.

It's important to provide tools to review or audit the client's current environment. After sharing their pain, its important to have a diagnostic (separate from your "advice") that mirrors that pain back. This will prepare them for the education and be open to receiving help.

Have someone in your organization take responsibility to stay on top of your ecosystem. Most ecosystems are not static. They are ever changing. Have the designated person perform weekly, monthly or quarterly roadmaps to discuss the implementation of change with leadership and key pillars in your organization.

Staying updated and informed is crucial. Encourage clients to attend relevant industry events, participate in webinars, and follow reputable tech news sources. Additionally, fostering a culture of continuous learning within their teams can enhance adaptability to the evolving technology landscape. Regularly assess their current tech stack, ensuring it aligns with business goals, and consider consulting with experts for strategic guidance.

In my experience education is the very first pillar of being able to stay in the know when it comes to staying current in an ever changing industry like ours!

Clients aren't interested in the nitty-gritty of tech specs – they care about solutions. Our role as technology experts? We're the tech translators. Instead of bombarding them with gigabytes of memory and processing power specs, I focus on what matters to them: no more waiting at the tills for customers, seamless user journey, analysing data previously unable to due to size or location. We break down benefits, costs, and options in a way that speaks to their goals, not tech jargon. It's about making the tech work for them, solving problems without drowning in technical details. Empowering clients means giving them the keys to outcomes, not overwhelming them with tech intricacies. That's the real value in navigating today's tech landscape

As a tech leader, it's crucial to bridge the gap between tech jargon and everyday language, especially when interacting with non-tech savvy clients. This means breaking down complex tech concepts into understandable terms and relating them to their specific context. It's about simplifying without oversimplifying, ensuring that clients not only grasp what's being discussed but also feel confident in their understanding. This approach fosters a sense of partnership and trust, enabling clients to make informed decisions and actively participate in their technological journey. Remember, effective communication isn't just about what you say; it's also about how it's understood.

Working with various stakeholders it’s often required to level-set to a foundation of knowledge that ensures that all parties can understand the implications of any decisions being put forward (as well as the rationale for doing so). Technology evolution (and the associated acronyms!) are in a constant state of flux. Ensure that the customers you’re working with understand the foundations, if not keep it simple before spouting technobabble. It will pay dividends.

Educate and provide the best ever training to them to make the skilled to use the products. It's necessary that a client needs knowledge to use the new technology enabled products and services.

The most important communication lies between the business team and the IT team. Although most of the situations, these two parties come from your customers and you are just an outsider, you should always try your best, and find the best methods you can to push them to communicate with each other. Without the agreement between them, the project will never succeed, or even never end.

Communication is key when it comes to dealing with clients and understanding their requirements. If you are dealing with smaller enterprises or businesses, then you need to go a step further as the resources on hand may be limited and the environment can be highly dynamic. By fostering an open dialogue, you are essentially laying down the foundation for delivering IT services that will contribute directly to your client's business success. Effective communication also keeps expectations in check, since many small business owners have limited experience with complex IT projects. One should aim to explain technical concepts to these clients in a way that is accessible, allowing them to easily make informed decisions.

The landscape is ever evolving so quickly at a much faster pace after COVID. We need to ensure we are well attuned to what has, is and will happen in the future. We need to be able to pick up on the strategic direction of the various trends both here and abroad to always be ahead of the curve.

Many customers expect innovation without failure. If you’re moving into a new product-centric operating model there’s a leap of faith that needs to be taken in delivering solutions that resonate with customers/consumers. Know that not everything you build will be successful. Deeply understand the problem space using qualitative and quantitative methods, align your product trio to triage your ideas, communicate widely, ideate and experiment.

Being able to adapt is crucial to staying ahead of the learning curve! In my experience those who fail do so because of their refusal to adapt to the responses they are getting from their market!

We are in a unique time where we have low code and no code solutions. We can empower more people to create. This new blood may think of things differently and create unique solutions/innovations. Classic IT still has a role to evaluate and approve projects created from company Hack-like events.

I find myself always figuring out better ways of delivering technical projects. Learning and growing is part of being a great IT Consultant. But the one thing that puts the few above the rest is learning about the technologies that will be deployed for your projects. You don't have to know as much as the technical people in your team. But I've seen the benefits in clients meetings, in project understanding, in team conversations and in mitigating potential problems.

In addition to this; aim to stay flexible when implementing new technology. Whether it’s by adhering to the composable trend or to build an MVP/POC and grow that, be careful to spend too much time building something that proves not to be the right fit with customers, employees or other stakeholders after having spent vast amounts of time, money and energy on it.

Adapting to new technology should be driven by need and utility, not just for the sake of technology itself. History tells, human evolution in clothing reflects a shift from the basic need for coverage to a desire for style and aesthetics. Similarly, a simple HTML/CSS page may appear similar to one created in React, but their utility and advantages differ. Upgrade tech to fit needs, not follow the latest tech trends For instance, using separate tools like email clients, accounting system etc may suffice, compared to integrated platforms like Zoho or HubSpot. The choice depends on the client's business needs and serves the purpose. Technological upgrades should be a response to identified needs, solutions align with the purpose to adapt.

I think the most important job of a consultant is to see what business owners don't. While the business owners are in the middle of the field, you as a consultant should get on a helicopter and analyze the situation from above. This way, you can get a clearer insight of the road ahead along with the obstacles and barriers in the way.

Over 30 years I have seen investments in IT deliver great benefits as well as create vast costs for limited benefit. For future investments creating IT solutions on ‘ever green’ platforms will aid longer term lifecycles and potentially reduce total cost of ownership to create a more financial viable product hosted on IT with known costs.

Here are a few more points that can be considered. - Adopting Cloud Technologies: Advocate for the adoption of cloud technologies. Cloud computing provides scalability, flexibility, and the ability to quickly leverage new tools and services. - Cybersecurity Measures: Emphasize the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. With rapid technological advancements, security is paramount. Regularly update security protocols and educate employees on cybersecurity best practices. - Data-Driven Decision-Making: Promote the use of data analytics for informed decision-making. Data-driven insights can help clients identify trends, make strategic decisions, and optimize their operations.

After years of being both in an advisory technology lens and later in a transformation and build platform - all the above are relevant- AND having a focused aligned strategy that is contributing to the overall organization goals is paramount to successfully running parallel technologies in the legacy while running POC in the new. I find some organizations wanting to hang on tightly to the known and others too fearful to test drive the new. Support a balanced medium, allow space for real creativity and all roads should lead to an ultimate goal in the strategy.
