What are the most effective transportation strategies for urban areas?

Bayamón City, with a population of 185,000, is taking short and long-term strategic planning for sustainability. The city is implementing the first Electric Vehicle (EV) Municipality System in Puerto Rico to reduce carbon emissions. The Mayor has already initiated the installation of batteries with Solar Panels in all traffic light intersections. These proactive measures taken by the city bear testimony to its commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. It's an honor for me and our team to be part of these projects and manage them as a City Administrator.

Understanding the barriers community members face traveling where they want to go is critical to sustainable transportation. The lack of sidewalks, protected bikeways, and access to transit impact mode choice. It is also important to consider the individual - a worker traveling to a job has different needs than a parent traveling to drop kid at daycare then job.

Don't be afraid to make citizens pay the full cost of transportation. Whether you fund infrastructure improvements through borrowing or direct spending, insist that funding come from everyone, not just the affluent. Higher fuel taxes, congestion pricing, higher fares, higher prices for parking - don't rule anything out. If this seems unfair, find additional ways of raising revenue (for other purposes) that fall mainly on the rich.

Para lograr transporte sostenible se hace necesario en algunas ciudades cambiar la duplicidad de trazados/rutas de autobuses por convenios de colaboración empresarial para generar pertinentes y cómodas integraciones. Adicionalmente, generar desarrollos urbanos con oferta de todos los servicios necesarios para generar ciudadelas de 15 minutos.

Para llevar a cabo un transporte integrado exitoso, se hace necesario la correcta y completa identificación de los elementos urbanos y sociales que integren correctamente con las diferentes tipologías de transporte necesarios para lograr un sistema como éste.

Innovative and flashy public transportation is a double edged sword. While some areas might benefit from uncommon or innovative system - or even require them - more often than not they tend to be vanity projects. Stakeholders, citizens, customers can quickly lose interest in flashy projects, especially when potential environmental impacts, and high price tags become evident or when the novelty wears off. Classic modes of public transportation should therefore not be disregarded, especially when they provide a safe, reliable, affordable, and clean alternative. Why not upgrade city busses into newer, electrical or hydrogen powered vehicles, for example? Possibilities are endless, even without untested vanity projects like hyperloop.

La innovación debería ser vista trasversal a todo el ecosistema de “ciudad inteligente” que comprende optimizar el funcionamiento y movilidad de los habitantes residentes y visitantes. De esta manera, varios son los factores que debemos “innovar”; siendo visto este término como: “hacer las cosas diferente para que funcionen mejor”. Utilizar los datos 📊 obtenidos en aplicaciones para entender dónde y qué debemos hacer, monitoreos aéreos constantes para solucionar problemas improvistos, las cámaras para reconocer que transporte funciona mejor; dependido la zona, puntos de carga eléctrica para incentivar el uso de nuevas tecnologías.

Se hace necesaria la innovación que permita ofrecer servicios a bordo e integración con otras actividades, deseos y necesidades de los usuarios al tiempo que se moviliza.

É preciso que projetos que adotem tecnologias inovadoras entendam as mesmas como meio de oferta de serviços e não sejam voltadas exclusivamente para escalar modelos de negócios. Entramos em um momento onde é necessário adotar práticas mais responsáveis e sustentáveis que levem em consideração aspectos sistêmicos e centrados nas pessoas e no planeta. Soluções centradas nas tecnologias são um erro que muitas organizações e governos vem cometendo há muitos anos. É preciso mudar essa direção.

Es importante escuchar las necesidades y expectativas del servicio de las comunidades donde se opera, incluidos los administradores de los proyectos comerciales e industriales que se desarrollan alrededor de las zonas de operación.

Hacer un analisis de las partes interesadas (grupos de interes) y sus necesidades expectativas incluso requisitos legales para extraer de ahi riesgos y oportunidades; ejemplo de grupos de interes a analizar: administraciones publicas implicadas, sociedad segun analisis geografico y socioeconomico y resto de grupos como empresas publicas y privadas y segun tamaños de las mismas i diferentes sectores economicos : servicios, industria, sanitario, educacional etc

Os métodos de cocriação e colaboração são muito eficientes, mas é necessário uma série de competências em quem gerencia esse tipo de iniciativa. Vejo muitos governos abrindo esse tipo de iniciativa para cumprir regras e normas antes de formular uma estratégia mais robusta que compreenda as necessidades da população e tendências futuras. Ao meu ver, precisamos de planos melhores formulados para operacionalizar ações que deverão ser analisadas com potenciais de transformação e impacto positivo.

In my experience it’s important to create an environment that supports participation. This environment starts by providing the community the education and knowledge necessary for all members to participate in the process including language, decision making process, and expectations - any previous decisions and decisions they can influence or decide. Intentionality is critical to ensuring that all community members can participate.
