Stress management is so personal. There are 7 "types" of rest (physical, mental, spiritual, social, sensory, creativity, emotional). Test & learn. Try out something for the first one that screams "yes" to you. For me right now it is creativity, so I'm answering these questions. Sleep, exercise, and reduction of screens cannot hurt. Don't under-estimate the power of emotional rest. I see a lot of burn-outs related to this one. Take time to feel your feels, don't judge it, welcome it and process your why. TLDR; Find out what you are craving & make a plan to respond to your needs in a balanced way for a couple of weeks.

Managing stress is always a challenge, especially during major pushes - but here are some things that helped me avoid burnout: 1. Try to eat food that nourishes you rather than comforts you. This can look different for different people but for me it was cutting down on friend stuff, trying to incorporate leafy greens, and reducing carbs a little so I don't feel groggy during meeting-heavy days 2. Limit caffeine intake to whatever keeps you below that anxiety-jitters-deadline level 3. Sport! work out, bike, take a quick walk outside, anything that gets you out of that chair 4. Be very honest with your boss about your limits. No one wants you to burn out. If they don't understand or respect your limits, leave. You're more important.

Product manager can play a revolutionary role in managing peak season deliveries. While there are multiple factors at play, it's the Product Manager who finalize the scope and mark it for a release. PM should always focus on demand vs the capacity of the team. This is a continuos exercise and should be tracked on a tool regularly. The more time spent on planning and negotiation, the lesser it would be on execution. Peak deliveries will pile up everytime but setting the expectation is a year long process. Delivering more doesn't necessarily mean solving more problems for the customer. One can try to showcase the outcome and user impact rather than output in terms of work items delivered.

Here's one idea to help you balance work-life with technology. Use your google calendar if you can :) It lets you create "speedy meetings" (limit to 45min), set an agenda and goal for the meeting to get straight to the valuable part of the discussion, and plan "focus time" before and after your calls to allow for the preparation and follow up work to actually get done. I used to have back to back meetings all day, about 12hrs work and it was destroying my work-life balance. Blocking time to do the pre/post work during my working day forced me to limit my WIP. Another solution is to use the color-coding part of the calendar to see how you are context-switching throughout the day and use that information to optimize your focus.

A problem shared is a problem halved; by discussing your workload and its impact on your life, you may find solutions such as additional resources or adjusted timelines. Moreover, a supportive work environment can foster better teamwork and a shared understanding of each other's challenges.

Typically, size of the company, culture and product phase will end up influencing work-life-balance. For example, before a big launch or in a startup environment, there is bound to be days of high stress. During these times, it's important to remain aware of the types of activities that help you maintain your focus, energy and productivity. Then, re-prioritize outcomes you are driving towards and communicate them with stakeholders. Make sure your manager is aware of your revised priorities and seek his/her guidance if required. Lastly, proactively anticipating such spikes and doing some pre-planning with family members beforehand will help prevent work stress spilling into home stress. Don't forget to unwind and recharge afterwards.

Be careful here. Managers can not always be trusted sadly! You have to anticipate how your manager will interpret this conversation which exposes a vulnerability -- this goes double for women and minorities. If you fear they will judge you as incompetent, then I'm sad to say you should probably seek support from a coach (like me!), or a mentor. Reducing your workload can be seen as synonymous with reducing your value. It's critical to find the right way to manage an overloaded schedule so that you don't make your boss defensive, or make yourself seem less capable.

This is exacerbated in remote setups where there's little room for regular interaction with colleagues. Interacting with your peers on a regular cadence to just talk non work-related matters can be helpful. Set aside some time for wellness activities or quick catch-ups, discuss your projects and challenges with each other, or simply talk regular stuff. Sharing your own thoughts can open up new avenues for discussion. Your peers can offer a fresh perspective of looking at things and open your mind to some unique ways of tackling your specific problems.
Finally, make it a habit to regularly reflect on your work-life balance. Take stock of what's working and what isn't, and adjust your strategies accordingly. This ongoing process allows you to stay ahead of potential burnout and ensures that you're continuously finding ways to maintain equilibrium between your professional responsibilities and personal needs during peak work periods.

A personal journal that captures your own thoughts, feelings, moods, and unfiltered opinions can be a great internal document that helps you record the present and look back at it later. The act of writing allows you to empty your mind and pour it out, thereby acting as therapeutic relief. Doing so regularly creates a repository of your thoughts that you can revisit later should similar problems arise. This in turn will help your future self see, understand, and acknowledge just how far you've come, possibly making it easier to practice gratitude.

Reconnecting with passions, hobbies, or interests outside of work helps break the monotony and can add some flavor to a routine, working lives. Find some room for rest and recreation in a busy day by taking baby steps towards carving out time and a headspace where you can allow these ideas and activities to flourish.
