What do you do if your team members are constantly at odds with each other?

Can I lock them in a room and throw the key away? I'm just kidding. The first thing I will do is understand the why of the conflict. Why can't they talk things through? This usually speaks to a professional issue that borders on personal. Without identifying the real issue or issues, it would be giving bad advice, and it will likely not work. Both parties have to list the issues from their point of view. This would be my starting point.

Taking time to listen actively Change can often feel scary, Take lead with guidance and reassurance. Creating space for different point of views, ideas and perspectives. Don’t be afraid to change your approach when required. You might question your own skills or judgment which could lead to indecisiveness. To squash imposter syndrome, look for evidence of your capability in feedback from your mentors and seniors. Take the time to set expectations with each other. Agree on how you’re going to work together, and how you prefer to communicate.

I think of it like being a mediator among friends who are having a disagreement. I start by creating a safe space for open dialogue, just like you would with friends sitting down to talk things out. Perhaps one team member feels their ideas aren't being heard, while the other feels their contributions are undervalued, similar to friends feeling misunderstood. One thing I found useful is digging to know the root of the conflict. Is it a value-based conflict? or task-based conflict? or relationship-based conflict? Knowing the type of conflict will determine the type of solution that that will be applied to solve the conflict. To identify the root cause of the conflict, I ensure that everyone feels free to speak or air their concerns. Every communication and concerns must to made know from a solution standpoint. When resolving or finding the root cause of the conflict it is always with the mindset of finding a solution and not amplifying the problem.

Empathy is a critical skill that every leader must master. I define it as emotions that is intelligent enough to understand. In showing empathy when resolving conflicts we work to completely understand all sides of the divide through active listening and then put forward the need the team members to embrace actionable empathy towards themselves. Actionable empathy goes beyond understanding but acting on the understanding to resolve the conflict. Actionable empathy propels actions toward dealing with the conflict!

This is probably the hardest for team members in conflict to do, because it's so difficult to let go of your own inner dialogue, interpretation and voice of judgment that very often discredits everything the other is saying. When we are triggered we enter into blame, pointing fingers, right/wrong mindsets, panic....and none of this is a state from which we can truly listen and empathise. So here I find the conversation needs to be majorly slowed down. After nearly every statement that one person says, I often ask the other to repeat back what they heard and understood. And then we check with the first person if they got that right. Until there's a green light, we don't go ahead to the next statements. That's real listening.

Virtual platforms, written communication channels, or facilitated discussions are alternatives. Once foundational issues have been addressed, face-to-face meetings can be reintroduced. The location should also be carefully considered when scheduling these meetings.

I find it always works best if you make an informal coffee chat with each individual separately, pay attention to what they are saying. Most important do not forget to ask how you can help? Invite the team members for a group session and encourage them to brainstorm how they would like the situation to see. Sometimes people just want to be heard you would be surprised.

Once parties involved can come to the understanding of collaboration instead of unhealthy Confrontation, then we are half way through the path of resolving the conflict. Taking it to the finish line would be getting all parties involved to reach a win win resolution as a result of the collaboration.

I like to invite people into what I call a "clear the air conversation". The intention is clear that this is about surfacing elephants and understanding what's really going on under the surface. Often Ill ask people to share their interpretation of events and then ask the others in the conflict to share if they can understand how that person interpreted things in that way, even if they themselves have a completely different way of interpreting the situation. This starts to build connection, trust, and opens the conversation to deeper levels of vulnerability as people begin to see that they wont be judged for the way they see or experience the situation they're in.

This is probably the hardest part because behavior change takes time. What Ill often to is establish a list of FROM behaviors (current reality that isnt serving us and that we want to step away from) and TO behaviours (that we want to move towards to embody the future desired state. We will break these down into team ones, and then each individual has to come up with their own that support the team ones. This is the start. Then the next weeks are a practice arena with check-in points every 2 weeks max to see what we can celebrate that was a successful FROM-TO shift....and where we still struggle to make the move.

Team members may have issues in getting along well with others due to other uncommon factors listed below: . Demographic diversity . Past experience . Divide and rule policy of seniors . Communal and caste consideration . Incompatibility due to education . Age factor In one case, it was seen that the team members were at odds with each other due to inflated egos. 'He is not listening to me. Actually he is much much junior to me' said one team member. In another case, one of the team members remarked 'He keeps talking in English' where it was a communication issue essentially. All said and done, the divide could be due to sundry reasons or even strange sometimes. Leadership is responsible to take everyone along and carry no bias.

In addition to developing conflict management skills, consider cultural awareness, flexibility, seeking feedback, modeling behavior, addressing systemic issues, continuous learning, and celebrating successes. Come to agreement after the conversation how the future behaviour is expected between team members. 5. monitor and give feedback.
