What do you do if your team consists of employees from different generations?

When my team includes members from various generations, I celebrate the diversity. Each person offers distinct insights and experiences. We capitalize on this by creating an environment of mutual learning and respect. By leveraging the collective wisdom, we tackle challenges more effectively and innovatively. This collaborative spirit not only strengthens our team bonds but also propels our collective growth, ensuring we remain adaptable and resilient.

Each generation and every individual has different knowledge, skills and abilities. Make sure that everyone works on tasks that corresponds with their strengths. Managers should also be aware of hurdles the different generations in the workplace may need to overcome. Managers should have a broader set of guidelines within which different generation's behavior and ethics shall fall and in which everyone can find their ease of adjustment.

I would actually consider this as a USP to have people from different generations for: (i) it helps to get different perspectives; (ii) you can identify different strengths and build a strong team; (iii) it reflects strongly on the diversity and inclusion within the organization

A strong thing that can be done, and is often counter cultural, is set up mentor systems where both people are actually mentoring each other. Identify the deficiencies and strengths of your people and have them help each other with it. Have the older person help the younger with how to balance work life balance. Have the younger show them new things in the field that have changed since the older started. This way they are seen as equals, but celebrated for their specific gifting.

Lead by example: Demonstrate inclusive leadership behaviors by treating all team members with respect, regardless of their age or generational background. Lead by example in promoting a culture of respect, collaboration, and appreciation for diversity.

As a leader, one special skill you can develop is the ability to see the people hiding in the shadows. Highlight those who don’t speak often. Celebrate people’s unique gifts. Praise whenever possible. Jeff Bezos famously says that he always has a meeting where the most junior starts first and then they work up the seniority chart till they reach him. He recognizes the value of hearing from other people before they hear his perspective. It stops people from being “yes men” and helps foster inclusivity and diversity of thought.

Managing a team with employees from different generations requires understanding, respect, and effective communication. So many great examples above how to adapt and overcome challenges.

Apart from the points mentioned above, I think managing a team with members across different generations also requires you to have: 1) empathy - to understand and accept their styles and preferences without making a particular generation feel neglected 2) the ability to give and accept feedback - to make everyone, including you, feel responsible and accountable for their work The focus should be on the goal and not necessarily the means to achieve the goal with a diverse team.
