For what purpose? It’s one of my favourite questions, and even though I rarely ask it verbatim (it can sound quite harsh without the right cushioning!), this question always yields powerful results. What do they need and want an innovative professional network for? What purpose will this fulfil? Relationships are important, however, building a network purely because we think we need one is often a fruitless, listless activity.

If my mentee needs assistance in building an innovative professional network, I'd guide them through identifying relevant opportunities, such as industry events and online forums. I'd advise on effective strategies for initiating and maintaining connections, leveraging social media, and participating in mentorship programs. Facilitating introductions to my network, refining their personal brand, and encouraging proactive networking activities would empower them to develop a robust professional network.

In today's world, everyone needs a strong online profile for work connections. Help your mentee make a great LinkedIn page that shows off what they're good at, their work history, and what they want to do next. Teach them to join in on online chats about their job area, share their thoughts, and post interesting stuff. This makes them more noticeable and shows they really know their stuff.

Even though being active online is key, nothing beats meeting someone in person. Encourage your mentee to go to events like industry gatherings, talks, and local group meetups. This is their chance to chat face-to-face with people who do what they love or work where they dream of working. Give them tips on how to start conversations easily and remind them to keep in touch with the people they meet afterward.

A great place to start is attending industry conferences, seminars, and networking events to meet like-minded professionals and expand their knowledge. Another option is joining professional associations or groups related to their field to connect with others who share their interests. Consider participating in workshops or training sessions to develop new skills and stay updated with industry trends. And don’t under estimate the importance of cultivating relationships through face-to-face meetings, coffees, or lunches, as personal connections often lead to valuable opportunities.

Offering value to any connection, personal or professional, enhances your ability to make solid and long lasting relationships. They are only successful if both parties contribute equally to eachother. Sure, there are swings of responsibility to either side at times, but generally 50/50 is key.

Tell your mentee that networking works best when they think about how they can help others first, not what they can get. They could share interesting articles, connect people who could benefit from knowing each other, or help out at events linked to their job field. By being the one who lends a hand or shares knowledge, they'll make a lasting impression. This makes people more likely to remember and want to help them in return, making them a valuable part of their work community.

Offering before asking is a very beautiful way of human connection. This has to be inculcated at a deeper level and not just an act of networking, as people understand vibes and words don't hit the spot at times because the vibe is not a match. We are aware networking is a process to gain but those who give, gain not only professionally but also a long term alliance. I always advice to be generous from the spirit and support, extend a hand or share network without having an agenda or wanting something in return and without judging people on their appearance, strength of company etc because people as abundance is not just about benefits but generosity. If you share what you have, it doesn't finish, it grows in heaps and tons.

Let your mentee know that good networking comes with practice and learning certain skills. They should work on really listening to what others say, sharing their thoughts clearly, and showing understanding. These abilities help in making stronger connections and really getting what others need. You can help them by acting out different networking situations together and giving advice on how they handle them

Soft skill development is the key to growing connections professional and personal. Advice your mentee to learn, work on themselves, communication skills and learn from the network like a hungry kid. The work, connections one gets in a networking community is awe'some but the knowledge and wisdom that flows should be grabbed with both hands in Gratitude. The most important skill that must be developed is LISTENING.

Networking can be a two way street, some people use this to gather, collect and make contacts. Your experience and knowledge will determine your use of this method. If you are less experienced and hoping to learn more about advancing yourself, then you can determine the advantages and selection process of events to attend. Be prepared in having discussions about you and asking for advice and information that would favor your efforts. Ask about the current and future job occupation growth market trends in your local cities and state. Research and ask about evidence based practices in assessing your abilities and industries to pursue. Networking is a method of helping us create an effective approach and a plan based on real time data.

I wouldn't mentor a person who I didn't trust. If I trust you, then I'll gladly open my network to you. It takes a long time to build a network. There are many strategies but what's worked for me is honesty and clarity on my needs. I also show a genuine care in maintaining the relationship. That's how I built my network. To build yours, keep and open mind and explore different types of interests. You mind find yourself becoming passionate about a topic that allows you to match with a new mentor, and his/her network as a result.

Keep pushing! Often people don’t need advice, they need a push! We all are afraid of the first step especially when our self made unrealistic ego is on the line. So the best thing that you can do to anyone is to make them take a leap, rest will be learnt during the journey.

First is ‘why’, then ‘what’. ‘How’ will be taken care in the journey. I would definitely ask my mentee on the ‘purpose’ of building an innovative network. This gives both of us a clarity of thought. A problem well defined leads to focused solutions. Or, in other way, ask right questions to get the right answers. I would ask my mentee following questions : 1. Why do you want this network? 2. What is your primary goal? 3. What’s in it for them? 4. What’s the big picture? 5. How will you know that you have achieved this goal?
