What do you do if your confidence takes a hit after rejection in Enterprise Software job applications?

As Mr. Ray Dalio says: Pain Reflection= Progress When the pain of rejection is mixed with some deep reflection on skills, gap and your dream job, you make tremendous progress in the next interview.

If a candidate is rejected for any job, the first and foremost thing is to know that it's okay, no one has the answer to every question. However, any questions that were not answered satisfactorily should be looked upon, and taken as an opportunity to learn the new segment of the vertical.

First of all, reflect on what you think you did well. And, then think about what you didn't do well. Make a list of each of those things. Then, reach out to the recruiter/manager to see if they can provide more specifics on why you were not selected. They may not respond, but if they do, thank them for your insight to help you get better. Sometimes, it is the basic "soft skills" related questions that trip people up. Things like, "Tell me about the biggest mistake you've ever made and what did you learn from it?".

Life is difficult so expect rejection in business and personal. If you loose confidence so quickly if rejected on a sales opportunity, then the person needs to internalize why they were rejected, be reasonable and rational and decide to make adjustments to be more successful next time. Don't be a victim

It will help you do better and give you insights into the mindset on the other end. 2. Be deliberate when looking for opportunities. Don't mass spam roles until you are confident you'll fit in personally, skill wise and culturally. 3. Chin up, move forward. A rejection isn't a comment on your skills. Just a misalignment, that is often a function of time and place.

Such hits are important to make you sharp enough for the next challenge. Also, such hits should only give you a short-term impact to stop and think again. Rest motivation to grow and make your way should persist

Interviews, at least good ones, are a lot of hard work on both sides and it’s always my intent to deliver and derive value for all involved. Seeking feedback (and offering it) in following up with those who invested time with me helps to achieve that end even if it isn’t the ideal end. It also furthers the relationship and keeps the door open in case something opens up. Early in my career two of the best jobs I had initially went to another candidate. I was genuinely thankful for those opportunities and expressed it, offered up some positives from my experience and sought constructive feedback only to get calls later asking if I was still interested. Be thankful, stay positive and keep smiling because you know you are valuable!

I always insist on chasing feedback. You can never stop learning no matter how long you have been in the industry. Sometimes the feedback is positive and sometimes it shakes your confidence. But if you don't know you can't fix it. We once interviewed someone that was for a role that we already had another candidate lined up for. They asked for feedback and we suggested that if we need someone else in the future that they will be the first we call as long as they were still interested. They were, we hired them 18 months later and they are still here working almost 6 years on.

Due to today's HR policies, most hiring managers in enterprisesoftware will not provide meaningful feedback to unsuccessful candidates above and beyond the generic commentary. Expect to hear the comment "we have found candidates better aligned with our requirements" or something to this effect Given the reluctance of hiring managers to disclose definitive reasons, I don't think this approach will bear much fruit for rejected candidates.

During time between contract positions, I opened a developer AWS account and went over the numerous AWS services using examples and tutorials. I also refreshed my working knowledge of JPA with Spring Boot and Kotlin by taking an online course from Thorben Janssen. Another activity that helped prepare me for interviews is taking time to understand and use powerful new AI coding assistants such as GitHub CoPilot. This skill will be essential for most software engineers... if they wish to keep working.

Understand which skills are required - the why - plan how to close gaps - document results and make them public. Continuously benchmark yourself - run some application tests to validate the perception of your skillsets.

Networking is such a critical component of breaking through after job rejection. I remember once in my career when I was looking for a new position and found an attractive enterprise software opportunity in LinkedIn. I was told by the HR department that was leading the search that the job was not available. I channeled this rejection by reaching out to a line manager in LinkedIn who shared common connections with me. This line manager advised me the job was available afterall. I found myself on a plane a few days later for an interview--which subsequently led to my being hired.

It is a very fickle market for filling Tech roles. I believe that each time you apply you receive some level of feedback. Most are system generated emails, but those that are actual interaction with the recruiter provides you with an opportunity to gain more data on your resume, and your approach. Turning this engagement to a connections can be valuable to your mental approach (we all agree rejection can impact your perception of yourself) but good recruiters remember your interaction!

I find it best to customize your resume and cover letter to highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job. This shows employers that you’ve put thought into your application and are genuinely interested in the role.

Persistence, intelligence with tact and a degree of patience are three qualities that balance and blend well together. Any one without the others can work but that’s a risky and often rare exception. Together they bring out the best in each other. Too much of one and/or the absence of the others and it can ruin a good meal as easily as a heavy dose of garlic without butter and salt.

These are strategic calls not cold calls fellas, you need to take a step back , goal attain with your contact , and make sure the outcome proves understanding of the potential, show results and an established plan to implement both proven success along with R&D on options for modules.

Don’t ever stop learning. Before Gary Vanyerchuk was a popular business speaker he had a wine podcast I discovered as a rookie cork dork. I’ll never forget his answer to the question, “What do you do with a bottle of wine you’ve opened but don’t really like?” Gary said, “I drink it.” When something doesn’t suit your pallet stay inquisitive and embrace it as a chance to grow in experience, understanding and depth. Many things of great value evolve from acquired tastes.

Maybe they are not worthy of you. There are lots of examples of super talented people who were refused jobs because they didn’t fit in. Not because they were inferior, but because they were a threat. Those people went on to form their own software companies and dominated over the people who turned them down. Not every rejection is an indictment on your ability. The rejection could be because of too much capability. Employers typically want people they can subjugate and control who will toe the line. Who will conform. Fit in. Not stand out. If you are a free thinker who has vision and who projects that “start up” pioneer confidence, you may also demonstrate superior capability to the person or company hiring you. Go Startup.

Well articulated topics we should have the reflections. I agree we should not be overly analyse about our shortcomings. There may be some factors not applicable to the candidates and hence are given the “let go” We should be mindful about our CVs as well With automations they need to be passing the the recruitment parsing engines for high scores to go through the screening The CV should be relevant to the Job descriptions. Often evaluations are biased with the first impressions of the CVs Leveraging the Linkedln platform networking capabilities one should brand themselves as the SmE of certain frameworks or tools in various ways. The achievements can be also part of the CVs
